This 1:100,000-scale map is used by helicopter pilots during operational flights. The map shows the location of the different kinds of helipads, no-flying zones, and reporting points in the UNIFIL Area of Operation. Helipads are categorized by their day and night usability. The flight data is regularly updated based on the information provided by the UNIFIL Air Operations Center.
The map displays a very detailed shaded relief with names of the different geographic features as well. Due to the diverse geographic features in South Lebanon, pilots are using the deep valleys or ridgelines as reference objects during their flights. The background was produced from 5-meter resolution digital elevation data with the tools of ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 software. The same aviation map is produced in 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 scale for operational planning purposes.
