This map was created to help the Infrastructure Department at MIC estimate the additional costs for a proposed road project cutting through a group of sand dunes by determining the volume of sand that will need to be moved.
Creating the map involved the use of surveyed dune heights, existing contours, and DEM points from which a triangulated irregular network (TIN) was created. Elevation points were extracted from the TIN in order to generate the 3D surface used in the calculations. Volumes were calculated for several “above plane” heights in order for the department to have the flexibility in adjusting the costs of the road project.
