This map shows in a variety of ways all housing units completed in Maricopa County from 1990 through 2008. It also shows the differences of housing growth over various time periods within the county. The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has been collecting residential completion data since 1990 from its member agencies.
MAG is a council of governments that serves as the regional agency for the metropolitan Phoenix area. MAG is the designated metropolitan planning organization for transportation planning in the Maricopa County region. MAG has also been designated by the governor to serve as the principal planning agency for the region in a number of other areas, including air quality, water quality, and solid waste management. In addition, through an executive order from the governor, MAG develops population estimates and projections for the region.
Each of the housing units MAG collects is geocoded (assigned geographic coordinates), which enables the data to be summarized by any geographic unit. This allows MAG to appropriately use the data for many purposes, including the production of population updates and projections. Over 640,000 new residential housing units were constructed in Maricopa County between the 1990 Census and December 31, 2008. That amounts to approximately 40 percent of the entire housing units currently in the county.
