The City of Greenville, South Carolina, has produced traffic collision maps since the early 1980s. The maps are used by the Greenville Police Department to help identify traffic collision “hot spots” in the city.
“Traffic Safety System, South Carolina” showed accidents occurring in the West End District from April to June 1984 and appeared in the first map book from Esri, then titled ARC/INFO Maps. The map was a combination of ARC/INFO macro programs and FORTRAN routines. Main menus were used to select the input or output function to be performed. Standard input forms were used for data entry, and a series of interactive prompts served to define the content of map and report displays. For map displays, accident and citation locations were calculated based on distance-from-intersection information originally entered in tabular form.
