New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources

Click to Enlarge Then and Now

The New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources oversees the province’s forests and is responsible for timber utilization, trail management, insect and disease protection, and fish and wildlife resource management.

This 1984 map appeared in the first map book from Esri, then titled ARC/INFO Maps. It shows many basic features in a section of New Brunswick forest. It shows eighteen tree species, including dead fir and spruce. It illustrates fifteen nonforest conditions, including agricultural land, rock, alders, and five types of roads. There are nine development stages depicted, such as old fields, burn areas, cuts, and windthrow/blowdown areas. Nine categories of crown closure are shown. Three stand indicators are shown: poor site, harvested, and cuts with residuals.

The map is at 1:12,500 scale. It was made from photointerpretation and transferring by Woodlot Service, Ltd. (1978). The basemap was compiled by the Forest Management Branch from the Land Related Information System’s orthophoto series. Point symbols indicate the photo centers.
