In January 1986, the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico, became one of the first municipalities in the country to adopt GIS technology, converting paper and manual processes with computer-generated maps and analysis. Over the years, Albuquerque has expanded its GIS capabilities and productivity while the city’s population has grown by more than 20 percent. GIS has encouraged and promoted quality growth.
“Location of UNM Students” appeared in the 1987 map book from Esri, then titled ARC/INFO Maps. The map was used to evaluate new possibilities for bus routing to accommodate University of New Mexico students’ transportation needs. Student addresses from UNM files were plotted using the NETWORK address matching program to locate those students who lived within the city’s boundaries.
