Kenton County Sanitary Sewers (2010)

Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission

Click to Enlarge Then and Now

A regional sewer utility, Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1), created the present-day working map of the same area depicted in 1987 as a simple descriptive map. The Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission and SD1 are long-standing partners in a data-sharing consortium called LINK-GIS, which has allowed the combination, distribution, and application of geographic information to be a central piece of the region’s continued successful development.

This map is an example of data used on a daily basis by SD1 to operate and maintain a sanitary collection system that is approximately 1,600 miles long and a storm system that is nearly 600 miles long. There are nearly one hundred ArcGIS software users within the organization, ranging from engineers and inspectors to customer service representatives and educators. ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Web applications customized for SD1 are rapidly increasing map use.

The sanitary collection system is a simple geometric network in an ArcSDE geo-database, whereas the storm system is composed of feature classes without the geometric network component. Both systems, as well as the planimetric data, are saved as read-only layer files on the server to maintain the integrity of the data. The sanitary and storm systems are integrated with an asset management system called GBA Master Series, which provides easy access to such essential information as inspection records, video of televised lines, sources, dates, and documents.
