Parsons Corp. created a series of maps showing the areas affected by proposed high-speed rail alignments in the Central Valley of California. The railroad alignment will create a raised barrier to traffic. Selected crossings will be grade separated so that traffic can continue unimpeded. But other crossings will simply be closed, affecting traffic circulation. This map shows the effects of road closures on access to fire stations.
Using ArcGIS Network Analysis tools, Parsons also calculated the services areas for police and other emergency services, as well as schools and libraries, to analyze the effects on local communities of closing or maintaining selected rail crossings.
