This map shows expected evacuation zones in the event of a tsunami event occurring on the Bay of Plenty coast of New Zealand. It was created to help with civil defense and emergency management, both for planning and preparation and as a response tool in the event of a tsunami warning. As the modeling of inundation areas is a time-consuming and computationally intense process, it is unlikely that inundation predictions will be able to be completed in an actual event situation so predefined evacuation zones are essential.
The map shows three evacuation zones: The red zone is intended as a shore-exclusion zone and can be designated as off-limits in the event of any tsunami warning, regardless of size. The orange zone indicates the area to be evacuated in most distant and regional source official warnings. The yellow zone has been calculated to cover all maximum credible tsunami and is intended as an evacuation zone for local source events based on locally determined risk.
