This map shows the concentration of iron and titanium in the maria on the near side of the moon. Iron and titanium are part of the mineral ilmenite (FeTiO₃), which has the ability to capture and retain gases, such as hydrogen and helium, from the solar wind. An isotope of helium, helium-3, can be found in ilmenite and is especially valuable for nuclear power production.
