This map was part of a project to design the environmental infrastructure of Regione Piemonte in Italy. The project combined ecological connectivity with historical, cultural, and tourist considerations. The connectivity has been conceived as a network of core areas and their links. The core areas of the network are parks, Natura2000 sites, high natural value areas, and other cultural and historical sites. Connections are organized on a typological base (rivers, land, and "intangible" connections) and they are classified by their actual connectance and stability.
The map was created by Istituto per le Piante da Legno e l'Ambiente (IPLA) and the Regione Piemonte working group as a part of the Regional Landscape master plan, and it is the framework for all the sectorial plans with environmental effects. All the maps realized during this project have been used to assess the environmental effects of Regional Rural Development Program. This project also is a guideline for urban planning, especially in cases of new residential, commercial, or industrial development near or inside areas of high natural and environmental value.
