These maps identify areas within the San Diego Gas & Electric Co. service area most affected by emerging technologies such as plug-in electric vehicles. In 2011, plug-in electric vehicles will enter the market in increasing numbers. Plug-in electric vehicles have the potential to add significant stress to localized areas along the electrical distribution system. This new technology, among others, has the potential to add significant stress to localized areas along the electrical distribution system.
The maps show the utility's service territory, segmented by ZIP Codes, along with three main criteria for determining grid readiness: electrical meter install date, population density, and demographics.
The installation date of the meter provides a reasonable assessment of an electrical panel's age and ability to accommodate the energy consumption of the vehicle. High population density coupled with high energy consumption can lead to overloading a transformer. Demographics assess economic ability to afford new technology, ranked on a scale from one to six. Without knowing the exact characteristics of the electrical distribution system, this analysis provides a preliminary assessment of emerging technology impacts.
