All field personnel maintaining or repairing the Irvine Ranch Water District's three pipeline systems (potable, nonpotable, sewer) are issued 11-by-17-inch field atlas map books, one for each pipeline system. Unfortunately, frequent changes or additions to the systems make the atlas books outdated. To give field crews access to more up-to-date mapping information, the district has been working on deployment of a laptop GIS solution on a pilot basis.
The laptops, running Field Mapplet by DCSE, are being used by several maintenance crews and the Underground Service Alert (USA) crew for data viewing, work order processing, and submitting redline edits. The pilot project has gone well, and future plans include getting more crews using the laptop GIS solution, as well as deploying additional Field Mapplet add-ons for managing valve turning maintenance and hydrant flushing maintenance.
