ArcIMS 3.1 Integrates with ArcGIS Desktop

ArcIMS provides the foundation for disseminating high-end GIS and mapping services via the Internet. ArcIMS is the only software that enables users to integrate local data sources with Internet data sources for display, query, and analysis in an easy-to-use Web browser. Version 3.1 introduces a number of new features.

One of the highlights of the latest release of ArcIMS is its integration with the ArcGIS software family. The ArcGIS Desktop products (ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo) can now connect directly to the map and feature services provided by ArcIMS 3.1 and use ArcIMS as a data source in conjunction with other data types.

Also, with the release of version 3.1, Esri has internationalized ArcIMS; messages and menus have been placed into resource bundles for easy localization, and the software supports code pages for all languages for shapefiles and database files.

ArcIMS 3.1 also offers significant security enhancements including support for Secure Socket Layers (SSL) and Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS). Other enhancements include new Java connectors, allowing integration with JavaBean, Java Server Pages (JSP), Java applets, and desktop components (four new Java and JSP samples and nine new ColdFusion samples are included); support for the latest OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Web Map Server (WMS) implementation specification; a new Scale Bar Properties button in ArcIMS Author/Manager; the ability to read angles for TRUETYPEMARKERSYMBOL rotation from a database field; and direct connect to Oracle Spatial and SQL Server databases. ArcSDE 8.1 layers can be added to ArcIMS and used in an ArcIMS configuration file. ArcIMS 3.1 is fully supported on Windows 2000, Solaris, and AIX.

ArcIMS 3.1 also introduces ArcExplorer 3.1, the newest version of Esri's free Java-based data viewer. ArcExplorer 3.1 can connect directly to the Geography Network (www.geographynetwork.com), allowing users to access services and applications built by other participants. To download ArcExplorer 3.1 free of charge, visit www.esri.com/arcexplorer.

Finally, at version 3.1 Esri has significantly added to its documentation and reference materials, thereby helping users to better and more easily develop applications.

ArcIMS 3 customers who are current on their maintenance will automatically receive ArcIMS 3.1 at no additional cost.

Future extensions planned for ArcIMS 3.1 include the ArcIMS Route Server, which provides multipoint routing capabilities, and the ArcIMS Metadata Server, which offers complete metadata publishing and search capabilities.
