Much of the inner workings of geographic information systems is organized around data models: computational structures (rasters and vectors are common variants) that determine how GIS stores, organizes, and displays various types of information for different purposes. Put simply, data models treat the world in terms of objects that represent entities and their related attributes. In GIS, there is usually no dedicated model of the processes that govern dynamics, adaptation, and evolution of a system. Updated Operations Center Helps U.S. DOI See Bigger Picture
Created in 1849, the United States Department of the Interior (DOI) has a different role from that of the interior ministries of other nations, which are usually responsible for functions that, in the United States, are performed by the Department of Homeland Security. Known as “the department of everything else” in its early history because it was tasked with an assortment of unrelated functions, DOI has evolved to become one of the country’s principal public conservation agencies responsible for protecting the United States’ natural and cultural resources and acting as steward of its trust responsibilities continued on page 34

Esri’s Updated Demographics
This April 2009 map of unemployment illustrates how the national economy is doing at the county level. The Esri data team tracks the current conditions and models this data to accurately reflect local conditions. This data is part of the small area statistical numbers released once a year to highlight change and reflect current demographics between census years. Complementing this map are Esri’s labor force estimates that accurately model historical and seasonal patterns from the state and county monthly time series of the Local Area Unemployment Statistics current to April 1, 2009.
