When the NASCAR announcer at the Dover International Speedway in Delaware, says "Start your engines" this Memorial Day weekend, most eyes will be on the cars revving up to race. But some public safety officials will be glued to their computer screens at a nearby command center, using digital maps created using GIS technology to monitor the entire race venue, including the campgrounds and vendors areas. Using ESRI ArcGIS Mobile in tandem with ArcGIS Server, they will get a complete picture of what's happening in the field. Read the article.

Free Online Geocoding
Want to quickly and easily geocode a few addresses on a map?
Try using the U.S. Address Finder, the Canadian Address Finder, or the European Address Finder, the three online address finders in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2. These address locators, available at no charge from within ArcMap, use Web services for geocoding and Tele Atlas data.

The United States General Services Administration (GSA) locates offices for more than 100 federal agencies using its Automated Advanced Acquisition Program (AAAP) online application. ESRI's GIS technology helps power the application. GIS allows the AAAP to quickly and automatically identify available buildings within a specific geographic area and rank them by price. Steps are being taken throughout the European Union (EU) to develop a comprehensive spatial data infrastructure. Called the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE), the initiative is meant to make geospatial data more readily available for policy making across the European community. Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER)/Line shapefiles can be downloaded at www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/index.html. ESRI users can easily incorporate TIGER/Line shapefiles into their GIS as supplemental data or as a base layer. This data supports mapping and geocoding and includes points of interest such as roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes. Download now.
