ESRI Offers GIS Software and Training Grants to Botanical Gardens and Zoological Parks

Program Supports the Application of GIS Technology to Horticultural Management and Conservation

Redlands, California—ESRI is offering software and training grants to botanical gardens, arboreta, and zoological parks that want to incorporate GIS into their operations. The overriding goal of the program is to support the application of GIS technology to plant conservation, management, research, and educational activities.

ESRI recognizes that botanical gardens, arboreta, and zoological parks are at the forefront of biological scientific research and conservation efforts and play an important role in educating the public about the natural world. The grant series is intended to supplement these institutions' efforts by bridging the technology gap where financial resources remain an obstacle to progress.

"Missouri Botanical Garden is pleased to support this GIS software grant program for plant collections," says Rebecca Sucher, coordinator of plant records at Missouri Botanical Garden. "We use GIS technology daily to conduct research activities around the world; educate children about conservation; and manage our collections and facilities in areas such as landscape design, conservation, and horticulture. The ESRI GIS software grant will enable more zoos and botanical gardens across the United States to take advantage of this powerful and much-needed tool."

The ESRI Start-Up Grant Program has two main objectives: (1) provide the necessary tools for data creation and maintenance, analysis, and mapping as a means of improving plant management and conservation and (2) provide a foundation dataset that can be extended to other departments within the applicant's organization or shared between institutions. A team of ESRI staff, members of the American Public Gardens Association, and members of the Association of Zoo Horticulture will review all applications to determine the recipients.

Applications for these grants are now being accepted. The official deadline for all submissions is 5:00 p.m., Pacific Time, June 30, 2008. For more information or to apply for ESRI grants, visit www.esri.com/grants/esri/education.html.
