ESRI's Mobile GIS and Trimble's GPS Technology Used for Emergency Planning in El Salvador
In developing countries such as El Salvador, disaster planning and preparedness are not generally a priority, and as a result, they are often hard-hit by disasters. The Digital Mapping Solutions pilot project in El Salvador, led by World Vision, a humanitarian relief and development organization; LumiMap, a U.S.-based GIS and technology organization; and the University of Mississippi, was designed to create digital mapping solutions for these countries to help them better plan, prepare, and respond to emergencies. Using ESRI's ArcIMS and ArcPad software and Trimble's GeoXM GPS units, the project team developed a set of tools for disaster planning and preparedness, risk assessment, mitigation, and emergency response.

How to Visualize a Business Ecosystem Using SAP and ESRI Technology
This article discusses the power of service-oriented architectures in a new field, enterprise ecosystem visualization. It explains how innovative mashups, using ESRI GIS and SAP customer relationship management (CRM) and NetWeaver Business Intelligence, allow companies to capture a wide variety of data, including demographic or statistical population, typical consumer behavior by region, and consumer traffic, which can be used to simulate and study the purchasing power of residents in certain areas and visualize this information on a map in three dimensions.

Tele Atlas and ESRI Support GIS Education with Conference Grants
ESRI and Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital map data and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, are teaming up to provide five educators from the United States and Canada with a trip to the 2007 ESRI Education User Conference (EdUC). Through the scholarship program, Tele Atlas will present recipients with $400 toward travel costs, and ESRI will provide complimentary admission to the conference in San Diego, California, June 16-19. EdUC provides a forum for members of the education community to come together and share their knowledge through user-led presentations, special interest group meetings, hands-on computer labs, and the EdUC EXPO.

GIS in Action

DHS Selects ESRI for GIS Enterprise
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has signed an Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) with ESRI that will enable the agency to deploy the full spectrum of ESRI GIS software throughout its organization. The comprehensive agreement provides the department with an easy and cost-effective method to provide enterprise-wide GIS software, professional services, and training to DHS employees. It will enable DHS to expand the use of GIS to mitigate, prepare for, and respond to events as well as secure U.S. borders, enable trade and transportation, and enforce U.S. law.

GIS Enables Groundbreaking E911 Application at Maui Police Department
The Maui Police Department (MPD) has improved its ability to locate and respond to emergency calls from cell phones by implementing a GIS-based E911 system. Using ESRI's ArcView and ArcInfo software to locate wireless callers who may be on the beach, hiking off road, or camping at a remote site, the system provides police and others with the ability to help those in need who might be hard to locate otherwise. In addition to the E911 system, MPD uses ArcGIS for a number of crime analysis and preplanning activities including classifying crimes by geographic area, date, and time; performing visual incident analysis; and event coordinating and modeling as well as tactical and strategic planning.
