Water/Wastewater
Party Sponsor
Once
again, Trimble was a Platinum Sponsor of the ESRI UC, and this year's event offered the best
opportunity yet to learn about Trimble's positioning solutions. For example,
in the Exhibit Pavilion, Trimble showcased a wide range of applications for
survey, GIS data collection, asset management, utilities, transportation,
natural resources, and public works. At the booth, attendees were excited to
get their hands on the recently introduced Trimble
Yuma™ rugged tablet computer as well as see previews of the new GIS-based
office and handheld asset maintenance inspection product for utilities.
In the support area, the new online Trimble
Knowledge Network as well as the Trimble
Assistant remote support platform provided examples of the company's
comprehensive customer support solutions. Outside, the Geo
Spatial van provided demonstrations of the latest data acquisition
technology available from Trimble.
Trimble
sponsored numerous events throughout the week, including the ESRI Federal
Reception, the Water/Wastewater Party, and the Transportation Special
Interest Group (SIG). In addition, Trimble participated in five track
sessions and offered a variety of short presentations in our booth theater
area. Over 120 people attended the lunchtime GPS 101 session, and the SIG
meeting on mobile field data collection with CartoPac Field Solutions and
Laser Technology, Inc., was well attended by new and existing users
interested in the latest advances in data collection technology.
Trimble
staff members were proud to be part of the ESRI UC and look forward to 2010!

Egypt
Uses GIS for New Parcel-Based Deeds Registry
The Egyptian government recognizes the long-term economic benefit of bringing
currently unregistered private properties into the formal property registration
system. With encouragement from a rising middle class that increasingly wants
to take advantage of mortgages, Egypt is streamlining the process and
replacing the manual registry index in Cairo with a parcel-based deeds
registration system that is linked to a digital cadastre using GIS technology
from ESRI and IBM's DB2 database management system.
Case
Study: Reliance
Infrastructure Limited Integrated GIS with SAP and SCADA
Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra) distributes electricity to more than
25 million consumers across India, including Delhi and Mumbai, and needed a
cohesive platform for accessing and updating data related to its complex and
scattered electric distribution network. RInfra selected a GIS platform from
ESRI. To ensure fresh data and enable better analysis for decision making,
the company integrated GIS with its SAP business software and supervisory
control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.
NAVTEQ
Selected by ESRI for ArcLogistics Navigator Solution
ArcLogistics Navigator is powered by NAVTEQ map data for the United States,
Canada, and Europe. NAVTEQ's database is a comprehensive collection of
navigable attributes, including turn-by-turn directions, the latest street
geometry, address information, and speed limit data. NAVTEQ's extensive
database provides ArcLogistics users with a high level of accuracy and helps
them find the most efficient routes to their destinations.
Success
Story: City
of San Diego, California, Takes Enterprise Management to the Field
As the eighth largest city in the United States, San Diego's economy is
largely supported by dynamic modern industries. The ESRI/SAP system that was
pioneered in 1999 by a single city division has grown to a large integrated
system that is now used by many city divisions and departments. A strong
believer in the value of technology, the City of San Diego has demonstrated
creative uses of technology to effectively serve its employees, residents,
and community.
ESRI
and Microsoft Launch Fusion Core Solution
The ESRI UC in July was the site of the launch of the Fusion
Core Solution, a public safety and homeland security solution
architecture designed by ESRI and Microsoft. Combining the robust
capabilities of ESRI's ArcGIS Server Advanced Enterprise and Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007, the Fusion Core Solution helps public safety and
homeland security professionals more effectively prevent today's evolving
physical and virtual security threats. In addition, the solution strengthens
the ability of government agencies to prepare, assess, and respond to natural
disasters.
ESRI
Is a Finalist for Microsoft's Public Sector, Government Partner of the Year
ESRI was recently honored as one of two finalists selected for this Microsoft
award that recognizes partners that have developed and delivered exceptional
Microsoft-based solutions. ESRI was nominated as a result of the superior
value of the Fusion Core Solution, a technology jointly developed by ESRI and
Microsoft, to enable fusion center teams to immediately assess and model
emergency situations on a dynamic electronic map. This reduces cycle times
and offers decision makers actionable information of much higher quality.
ESRI is the only GIS vendor to provide a complete suite of geospatial
software solutions that can work as clients to the spatial extensions to SQL
Server 2008.

GIS in Action
GIS
in Tough Economic Times
In good economic times, government agencies and businesses were attracted to
GIS because of its promise to save time and money. In an economic downturn,
the ability to do more with less has become imperative for organizations.
Whether it is analyzing employment locally or nationally, examining variables
in the declining housing market, exploring energy use, or searching for
solutions to the collapse of financial markets, GIS is playing a critical
role in how governments and organizations find solutions.
Video: Conference
on California's Future: Leadership Summit Keynote Address
In this keynote presentation, John Young, ESRI's director of enterprise
platforms, discusses GIS as a mainstream enterprise strategy for handling
mission-critical applications.
Launch
of Spatial Roundtable
ESRI has launched the Spatial
Roundtable, a site where GIS industry thought leaders share their
opinions about business and organizational challenges in the geospatial
community. Each month, a new topic will be addressed. The first discussion is
focused on insurance and asks the question, Why do so few insurers use GIS?

New
Telecom Mapping and Analysis Package Creates Detailed Maps of Broadband Gaps
Many rural and remote areas of the United States remain unserved or
underserved by high-speed Internet. ESRI has introduced a new mapping
solution for telecommunications companies, Telecommunications Mapping and
Analysis Package (TMAP), to better determine where those areas exist and to
define ideal locations for expansion. Currently $7.2 billion in federal
stimulus funding is available for expanding broadband coverage. Companies can
use the package to map existing services and analyze future needs at the
state, regional, or national level, all of which can help substantiate their
justification and qualification for stimulus funds.
ESRI
President Jack Dangermond Discusses the Future of Mapping Technologies
In a recent interview with Computerworld, Jack Dangermond shares his
views and vision about the future of GIS. The interview also includes a brief
summary of the evolution of GIS.
Logistics
Technology Finds New Life in "Green" Times
Companies increasingly understand the business benefits of going green—not
only from the obvious perspective of operational efficiency, but also from a
marketing perspective. But the benefits to companies go beyond simply
"green" benefits: companies using logistic optimization
applications also benefit from reduced labor expenditures and fleet size, as
well as faster deliveries and more accurate time windows. GIS-based logistics
software provides the quantified information and necessary analytic
capabilities companies are looking for to help them increase the efficiency
of fleet vehicles by optimizing standard routes, leading to reduced fuel consumption.
