OverviewOperating System and Developer ResourcesESRI software programs are compatible with and closely follow the release schedules of Microsoft operating systems and software, ensuring the highest level of GIS functionality with Microsoft software. All ESRI products run on the Windows platform; please visit ESRI's Online Support Center for specific information. In addition, ESRI has developed its core product family, ArcGIS, using Microsoft's Visual Studio development tools. Customization for ArcGIS Desktop is performed using the built-in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) scripting capabilities. ArcGIS Desktop can be extended using a COM-compliant programming language such as Visual Basic or Visual Studio .NET for building and deploying custom GIS solutions. Developers are encouraged to visit the .NET Framework Overview section of the ESRI Developer Network Web site.
Technical SupportESRI maintains a Premier Support relationship with Microsoft. MobilityESRI's mobile product, ArcPad, runs exclusively on the Windows Mobile platform. ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop includes specialized tools for use on a Tablet PC. One toolbar feature is digital ink technology, which allows users to create notes or sketch diagrams and tie them to a geographic location. Ink can also be used to highlight features on a map and to sketch shapes that can be used to perform GIS editing tasks. The Tablet PC tools are part of ArcGIS Desktop 9.x or are available as a free download.
SQL ServerArcSDE, ESRI's application server software, allows users to store, manage, and quickly retrieve spatial data from SQL Server. ArcSDE is integrated with ESRI's client applications so users can deploy spatial data and mapping solutions to any client, from any server, anywhere on the network. ArcSDE supports SQL Server 2008; visit the Systems Requirements for ArcSDE page for specific version support information. ESRI is also a SQL Server reseller.
