2.0 Data Collections

2.1 Introduction
The ArcGIS Data Appliance includes three data collections: World Collection, USA Prime Imagery, and USA Street Map. A user can either acquire all collections as a single deliverable, or the World Collection only.

Each data collection includes a set of basemap and overlay layers-in both 2D map cache and 3D globe cache format-that you can use with your local data.
2.1.1 World Collection
The World Collection delivers high-performance visualization capabilities to your ArcGIS Server applications and services. This collection-including World Imagery, World Street Map, Physical World, Political World, and World Shaded Relief-contains 1 TB of cartographically designed basemaps and overlays that are prerendered and precached at multiple scales.
2.1.1.1 World Imagery
World Imagery includes satellite imagery for the world at multiple resolutions down to 15 meters per pixel. This imagery is well suited for use as a natural view of the earth or as a basemap for other data layers (such as national park boundaries, hydrography, or ecozones). The imagery is intended for display at small-to-medium scales (i.e., down to ~1:75,000 scale).
World Imagery: 500 m and 15 m resolution satellite imagery for the world.
View of 15 m imagery in a 3D display with elevation data View of Sydney, Australia, with transportation overlay View of Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska
2.1.1.2 World Street Map
World Street Map includes a seamless, multiscale street map with highway-level data for the world and major-road-level data for the United States and Canada. The map is intended for display at small-to-medium scales (i.e., down to ~1:150,000 scale).

World Street Map is well suited for visually locating places and addresses around the world and is useful as a basemap for displaying city-to-city routes. The World Street Map can also serve as a useful basemap for regional and local data layers, such as places of interest, and to support many local government and business applications.

World Street Map: Highways, major roads, airports, boundaries, place-names, and relief imagery for the world.
Regional view of western United States Highway map of the Geneva, Switzerland, region
2.1.1.3 Physical World
Physical World presents the Natural Earth imagery at global and continental scales. The source imagery resolution is 1.24 kilometers across the entire globe and 500 meters within the conterminous United States.

Physical World also includes scanned versions of the Operational Navigation Charts (ONCs) at a map scale of 1:1,000,000. The ONCs were produced by the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and include a variety of physical and cultural features. This layer includes more than 200 publicly available charts across the world.

At continental and subcontinental scales, this physical map is well suited for illustration of the earth's landforms and topography. It also provides a strong foundation for integrating environmental data layers such as faults, volcanoes, and other related global features.

Physical World: Land cover imagery and 1:1M scale ONC topographic charts for the world.

2.1.1.4 Political World
Political World provides a digital version of the Political World map from National Geographic's Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition. The map shows the extents of sovereignty for 192 nations and can serve as a background for other data layers such as current events, economic status, and information about issues and events influenced by politics and culture.
Political World: National Geographic styled political boundaries and place-names for the world.
Basemap of Mexico, ready for additional map overlays Regional view of central Africa including place-names overlay
2.1.1.5 World Shaded Relief
World Shaded Relief presents shaded relief imagery for the world. The source imagery resolution is 90 meters for all land areas between 60° north and -56° south latitude. For regions outside this band of latitude, the map resolution is 1 kilometer.

This map can be used to add shaded relief texture to other GIS maps. It provides a useful basemap for integrating various data layers (e.g., demographics, protected areas) using transparency settings, enabling the relief image to show through the other integrated map layers. It is especially useful for inclusion in maps that do not include orthoimagery.

This shaded relief imagery was developed by ESRI using GTOPO30, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), and National Elevation Database (NED) elevation data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

World Shaded Relief: Shaded relief imagery at 1 km or 90 m resolution for the world.

2.1.2 USA Prime Imagery
The USA Prime Imagery includes a seamless mosaic of 1-meter resolution or better aerial imagery for the contiguous United States along with satellite imagery for the world at 500-meter and 15-meter resolutions for display at smaller scales. The high-resolution imagery is a color mosaic of commercial and government imagery sources including recent submeter commercial imagery for many metropolitan areas and the best available government imagery for other areas. The imagery is provided with a metadata layer that describes the source, resolution, and currency of individual image footprints that can be published along with the imagery.

This dataset spans 8 TB and includes general boundaries, place-names, and transportation reference layers for the world for display at small-to-medium scales (i.e., down to ~1:150,000 scale). Detailed boundaries, place-names, and transportation reference layers for the United States are available separately in the USA Street Map data.

2.1.3 Street Map
The USA Street Map includes a seamless, multiscale street map for the United States and large parts of Canada with highways, major roads, minor roads, railways, water features, administrative boundaries, cities, and landmarks overlaid on shaded relief imagery for added context. This 1 TB collection also includes a complete world street map with highway-level data and reference data including detailed transportation and boundary overlay layers for display on other basemaps such as imagery. This map is intended for display at small-to-large scales (i.e., down to ~1:10,000 scale) in the United States and Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. How can a user see an example of the data that comes with the various data collections?
have open Internet access, you can view the ArcGIS SM Online services referenced at arcgisonline.esri.com.
  2. How is this solution installed?
The server and Data Appliance, which is delivered on a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, should be connected to the user's local network. Once the appliance is connected to the network, one or more services may be deployed on the user's ArcGIS Server instance that references the data on the appliance. The appliance includes Help documentation, in HTML format, that describes the data delivered on the appliance and the deployment steps necessary to publish as services.
  3. What format is the data delivered in?
The data is delivered in ArcGIS cache format (e.g., JPEG and PNG tiles) that is optimized for publishing with ArcGIS Server. The data is delivered in both map cache and globe cache formats for publishing as 2D and/or 3D services. The 2D map cache data is published in Geographic Coordinate System (GCS) WGS84 as 512 x 512 pixel tiles that may be reprojected on the fly in ArcGIS Desktop clients. The 3D cache is delivered in a cubic projection supported in ArcGlobeT and ArcGIS Explorer.
  4. Can a user geocode and/or route with this data?
No, the data is delivered in a precached map tile intended for visualization purposes only. The primary intent of the Data Appliance is to provide high-quality geographic data at a reasonable price for publishing with ArcGIS Server. The ability to geocode or route would require accessing the street data in its vector format, which would require a separate data license.
  5. Can users combine their own data with the data included on the appliance?
Yes, a user could purchase the appliance with additional storage capacity that could be used to host the user's own data, in either ArcGIS cache or other format (e.g., shapefile, file geodatabase), and published as services. These services could then be combined in an application (e.g., ArcGIS Desktop, Web ADF) with services published using data shipped with the appliance.
  6. If a user does not pay for the Yearly Standard or Premium Renewal and Support, is the user allowed to use the data after the first year?
No, the Data Appliance is provided with an annual right-to-use license that is extended through the Yearly Renewal. Our agreement with the data providers does not allow for perpetual use of the data. The only way a user is allowed to continue to use the data is to pay for Yearly Standard or Premium Renewal and Support.
  7. Does the ArcGIS Data Appliance allow for any updates this first year?
Yes, if a user purchases the Premium Upgrade for the ArcGIS Data Appliance. If this option is purchased, then one update will be provided within the first year, and the user will automatically be billed for ArcGIS Data Appliance Premium Renewal and Support starting the second year, allowing for two updates a year thereafter. If the Premium Upgrade for the ArcGIS Data Appliance is not purchased, there will be no update in the first year, and the user will automatically be billed for ArcGIS Data Appliance Standard Renewal and Support starting the second year, allowing for one update a year thereafter.
  8. Can I use the ArcGIS Enterprise Server license provided with this solution on another server?
No, the ArcGIS Enterprise Server license included with this solution is licensed specifically for use with the server provided.
