Cowlitz County PUD Implements GO! Sync Mobile GIS

Carlsbad, California, April 26, 2006—Cowlitz County Public Utility District (PUD) No. 1, a consumer-owned utility serving approximately 50,000 customers in Cowlitz County, Washington, has selected Tadpole Technology's GO! Sync® mobile GIS to drive business efficiency within its field operations.

Cowlitz County PUD chose GO! Sync as its standard mobile platform because GO! Sync seamlessly extends its investment in ESRI technology in support of its field operations, specifically its underground locating business. Because Tadpole Technology's flexible mobile applications are suitable for a range of field-workers, Cowlitz is able to equip its field-workers with a mobile system that focuses on the work patterns and abilities of the individual worker.

For this initiative, Cowlitz selected both GO! Sync (Mapbook) and GO! Sync (Redline). GO! Sync (Mapbook) will be deployed to field-workers needing a simple-to-use mapping application that provides easy access to geospatial information. GO! Sync (Redline), which boasts all the functionality of GO! Sync (Mapbook), provides additional tools that enable field personnel to sketch on top of a basemap and share their sketches with other workers in the field or back in the office.

"An important factor for us is that GO! Sync is a complete solution for utilities using ArcGIS," states Tia Christina, Cowlitz GIS manager. "It not only has all the needed field functionality, but it requires minimal training and can be quickly deployed."

The immediate aim of the rollout is to use GO! Sync to replace the paper maps used by underground locators. Leveraging the power of enterprise GIS, Cowlitz created targeted maps for the entire county with a locate layer, which will eliminate the inefficient process where field personnel must constantly find and take out paper maps for work. Now, mapping information is accessed on laptops via a simple graphic interface and manipulated using task-specific tools. Users can now quickly identify and locate underground assets to assist in damage prevention work practices and use GO! Sync (Redline) to make and share both sketches and field notes.

"We have implemented GO! Sync solutions at many utilities this year, and damage prevention is a common theme," comments Ian Martin, utility industry account manager, Tadpole Technology. "Mobile access to mapping information is important, but even more important is providing the mobile worker with mobile technology that truly suits their specific needs, because this is when our customers see return on investment."
