York Region Selects Geocortex Essentials for its Atlas Plus Project

Geocortex Essentials is an out-of-the-box application for ESRI's ArcGIS Server that empowers any organization to quickly develop, deploy, and manage Web-based GIS applications while eliminating considerable ongoing intervention associated with typical starter templates.

Toronto, Ontario—Latitude Geographics announced today that York Region has selected Geocortex Essentials as the foundation technology for six Web-based decision-support applications and views to be used as a regional atlas for planning and monitoring sustainable development of the region.

Atlas Plus is a GeoConnections-funded project awarded to York Region with participation from nine additional YorkInfo partners representing nine local municipalities and two conservation authorities.

"Atlas Plus will result in improved service delivery related to planning inquiries, fully leveraging next-generation Web mapping technology founded on Latitude Geographics' Geocortex Essentials 1.2 and ESRI's ArcGIS Server 9.2 Enterprise Advanced edition," says York Region's Nancy Prout, director of Geomatics.

York Region is expected to grow by 567,000 new residents over the next 25 years, and development to accommodate this population increase will be constrained by Ontario provincial government legislation targeting growth management including Places to Grow, Oak Ridges Moraine, Greenbelt, and the Generic Regulations from Conservation Authorities. "Atlas Plus will enhance our existing GIS infrastructure, bringing together data through Web map services and allowing planners and decision makers to use and share information for sustainable development and integrated planning in the region," adds Prout.

Underlying Atlas Plus is Geocortex Essentials, which will serve as the framework technology for visualization, geoprocessing, data management, reporting, and output capabilities to planners and decision makers from across the region.

"We are thrilled to be working alongside York Region on this exciting project," says Steven Myhill-Jones, president of Latitude Geographics. "Geocortex Essentials offers York Region everything they need to meet and exceed their Web GIS targets, including unparalleled integration with ESRI's ArcGIS Server and ADF [Application Developer Framework], a functionally rich and easy-to-use interface that is both OGC [Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc.]- and CGDI [Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure]-compliant; and an administrative layer for multidepartment management and enterprise control of the Web-based views and applications."

"Geocortex Essentials is more than just a template for viewing maps on the Web," adds Rob Lenarcic, Latitude Geographics business development manager. "Geocortex Essentials provides a hierarchical framework that will allow York Region administrators to create, manage, and extend multiple Web mapping applications from a single deployed instance of Geocortex Essentials. This approach not only assures total flexibility in application design to accommodate future enhancements but will propagate any changes into other York Region applications, saving the region valuable development time and dollars."
