ArcExplorer 9.3.1—Java Edition: Download with Instructions
System Requirements
ArcExplorer can be installed on Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Linux, or UNIX.
Download Steps
- Download ArcExplorer 9.3.1.
- Install ArcExplorer 9.3.1.
- Windows: Double-click AEJavaSetup.exe.
Installation on Windows requires administrator privileges.
- UNIX/Linux: Run SetupArcExplorer.
Installation Notes for UNIX and Linux
- For security reasons, the root user should not be used for installations.
- If you are pointing to a system Java Development Kit/Java Runtime Environment (JDK/JRE) for ArcExplorer—Java Edition, please ensure that you have write access to the JDK/jre/lib directory before installing.
- During the installation, files are put in the %TEMP% directory for utility purposes. A %TEMP% variable must be set, and the %TEMP% directory should be writable.
Additional Installation Steps for UNIX and Linux

Set up your account for UNIX and Linux.
ESRI recommends that you execute ArcExplorer from a C shell. The following instructions are for a C shell environment setup:
To use ArcExplorer after installation, add the following lines to your .login or .cshrc file:
setenv JAVA_HOME <path_to_supported_jre>
Note: Specify the path to the JRE you selected during the installation.
setenv AEJHOME /ArcExplorer
set path = ( $path $AEJHOME/bin $JAVA_HOME $JAVA_HOME/bin )
The next variable differs by platform:
Linux/Solaris:
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
AIX:
setenv LIBPATH $LIBPATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
HP-UX:
setenv SHLIB_PATH $SHLIB_PATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
To enable the changes, type
% source <.login or .cshrc>.

Edit the user $HOME/aimsclient.properties file.
- Copy the aimsclient.properties file from the $AEJHOME/Xenv directory to your user $HOME location.
- Update the value of the WebBrowser key in the aimsclient.properties file to point to the location of your default browser.
- Update the value of the AEJavaHelp key in the aimsclient.properties file to point to the location of the ArcExplorer online Help files.
Starting ArcExplorer in UNIX and Linux
With $AEJHOME/bin included in your PATH, start ArcExplorer by typing aejava.
