General | ArcGIS Data Appliance

In what format is the map data delivered?

The map data is delivered in ArcGIS cache format (for example, JPEG or PNG tiles) and optimized for publishing with ArcGIS Server.

The map data is delivered in both map cache and globe cache format for publishing as 2D and/or 3D services. The 2D map cache data is published in geographic coordinate system (GCS) WGS84 as 512 x 512-pixel tiles that may be reprojected on the fly in ArcGIS Desktop. The 3D cache is delivered in a cubic projection supported in the ArcGIS 3D Analyst ArcGlobe application and in ArcGIS Explorer.

Can I combine my own map data with the map data included in ArcGIS Data Appliance?

You can purchase a license for ArcGIS Data Appliance with additional storage capacity that can be used to host your own map data in either ArcGIS cache format or other formats—for example, shapefile or file geodatabase—then publish the map data as services. You can then combine these services in an application, such as ArcGIS Desktop, with services published using the map data that ships with ArcGIS Data Appliance.

How do I publish map data from ArcGIS Data Appliance as services?

ArcGIS Data Appliance is delivered on a network-attached storage (NAS) device that can be connected to your organization's local network along with another server running ArcGIS Server Standard or Advanced, at the Enterprise or Workgroup level.

Once ArcGIS Data Appliance is connected to the network, services can be deployed using ArcGIS Server to reference the map data on ArcGIS Data Appliance. The ArcGIS Data Appliance HTML-based help documentation provides information about the map data and the necessary deployment steps to publish the map data as services.

Will I receive any map data updates during the first year?

If you purchase the premium upgrade license for ArcGIS Data Appliance, one update will be provided within the first year. You will automatically be billed for the premium renewal and support starting the second year. This provides you with two updates per year. If you choose not to purchase the premium upgrade license, you will not receive a map data update in the first year. However, you will automatically be billed for standard renewal and support starting the second year, which provides one update during the year.

Can I continue to use the map data if I don't purchase a yearly standard or premium renewal?

No, ArcGIS Data Appliance is provided with an annual right-to-use license that is extended through the purchase of a yearly renewal. ESRI's agreement with the map data providers does not allow perpetual use of the map data.
