What's New in 9.3.1
Take a look at the new features and tools you can use with ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1.

Three-Dimensional Symbols

ArcGIS 3D Analyst includes over 500 industry-standard three-dimensional symbols that enhance scientific visualization and real-world simulation. These symbols can be used to represent GIS features, such as trees or fire hydrants for point features, grass or water for polygon features, and tubes or texture lines for line features. ArcGIS 3D Analyst supports specialized three-dimensional models, including MultiGen OpenFlight, 3D Studio MAX, and SketchUp formats, to allow a more realistic representation of three-dimensional features.

Styles

ArcGIS 3D Analyst includes prebuilt, three-dimensional styles for a variety of real-world, photorealistic symbols. These styles include

  • 3D houses
  • 3D skyscrapers
  • 3D industrial buildings and equipment
  • 3D basic shapes
  • 3D street furniture (signs, lights, benches)
  • 3D trees and plants
  • 3D vehicles

In addition, any TrueType symbol can be used as a base for a symbol and can be easily extruded to represent a three-dimensional object. This gives you access to the thousands of symbols included with ArcGIS as well as many more available commercially.

3D Text

ArcGIS 3D Analyst allows text to be displayed in 3D. Text stored in geodatabase annotation feature classes can be added to either ArcGlobe or ArcScene and shown as a "billboard" on the surface. Text controls let you easily change text symbols or offset text from the surface.
