Maplex for ArcGIS enables you to place labels correctly the first time based on your specifications for placement priorities and styles, label fitting strategies, and conflict detection rules. Conflict detection works across all map layers and takes into account your placement priorities and feature rankings.

These rules are dynamically applied based on the scale of the map and the features being displayed:
