Key Functionality

Portal for ArcGIS gives you the same functionality as ArcGIS Online, but you can choose to have it deployed behind your organization's firewall, or have Esri host and manage a private instance for your organization.

Deploying Portal for ArcGIS gives your organization a platform for managing all of its geospatial content. It enables secure and private sharing within the organization and leverages web, mobile, server, and desktop clients. Portal for ArcGIS is dependent upon an organization's existing ArcGIS for Server(s) and data, and can be integrated with Data Appliance for ArcGIS for a complete private solution that includes ready-to-use basemaps and task services.

With Portal for ArcGIS, your organization can

• Host and catalog user-shared content
  Users can register their maps, apps, and tools as individual items and add them to the collective set of information available to anyone inside the organization. Web maps, map services, imagery services, geoprocessing task services, and map packages can all be organized and cataloged to enable and promote sharing and collaboration by users within the organization.
• Discover and search
  Galleries, such as the map, web app, and mobile galleries, and the home page gallery can feature select content. Combined with the advanced search capabilities, it makes it easy for users to discover and find content. The search function uses metadata tags and also considers ratings, comments, access frequency, and the descriptive details of an item to return results.
• Share and collaborate
  Items cataloged in Portal for ArcGIS can be shared with the entire organization or with specific groups. Users can create groups to share items that have a common topic or to collaborate on specific projects. Groups can be kept private and by "invitation only" or they can be public so others can easily find them to browse and use group content.
