ESRI Authorized Training Program

Instructor Authorization Process

The authorization process includes seven steps as outlined below.

  1. Complete at least 200 hours and one year of experience with the software you are seeking authorization to teach.
  2. Submit a Prequalification Questionnaire. You must submit a separate questionnaire for each course you intend to teach.

Your prequalification responses will be reviewed, and you will be notified of your status within 30 days.

Candidates must show evidence that they took the prerequisite course(s) from an ESRI-employed instructor by submitting a copy of the certificate(s). Prerequisite courses must have been taken within the past 12 months.

Prerequisite courses may be taken from ESRI in Redlands, California; at any of our regional offices; or from an ESRI Learning Center (not to be confused with an Authorized Partner Education Center). Please review the course catalog. Note that classes taken from either an authorized instructor or the ESRI Virtual Campus do not meet the ATP prerequisite course requirements.

Even if a candidate has many years of experience using the software, it is not a replacement for the class. We want our experienced users to take the class from the perspective of becoming a prospective instructor.

  3. All approved candidates are required to complete a performance evaluation during the authorization process. Performance evaluations must be scheduled through your regional office ATP coordinator. Many candidates find that it is convenient to schedule their evaluation while taking their prerequisite course(s). Please contact your regional office ATP coordinator for details.

The following may help you in preparing for your performance evaluation:

    1. If approved,1 you will receive e-mail with either
      • An approval and an order form for your application and exam (skip to step 4); or
      • A conditional approval stating what items need to be completed before you can purchase the application and exam (e.g., prerequisite courses, experience).
    2. Complete the requirements addressed in your conditional approval e-mail. If prerequisite courses are required, fax certificates to ATP upon completion.
    3. Once all requirements have been met, ATP will e-mail your approval with a fee form to order your application and exam.
1You may not conduct any classes until after you have received your signed, executed agreements and your authorization fee has been paid. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you wait until you receive your instructor certificate before scheduling any classes. ESRI is not responsible for accommodating classes you schedule prior to your authorization.
  4. Upon receipt of your application fee, ATP will e-mail your application and exam. Your application will consist of the exam, an authorization fee form,2 agreements2 for you to sign and return, the ATP book policy, and a copy of the ATP policies and procedures.

You will have 30 days to complete and return your exam. ATP strongly encourages you to utilize the 30-day examination period to extensively research and verify your examination answers. Late exams will not be accepted, and you will be asked to reapply. To expedite the authorization process, return the authorization fee form and signed agreements with the exam.

2These items will not be processed until all requirements have been met and your authorization is complete.
    1. Upon receipt of your exam, ATP will send your results to you within 30 days.
    2. Candidates are required to score at least 85 percent. If you pass the exam, skip to step 6.
    3. If you score below 85 percent, you will have the opportunity to submit a reevaluation fee, and we will send you a new exam. Applicants must return their reevaluation fee within 30 days of receipt of exam results.
    4. If you pass on the second attempt, skip to step 6.
    5. If you fail on the second attempt, you will be asked to reapply to the program in six months.
    1. ATP will notify you of your exam results and any missing application items via e-mail.
    2. If you have not yet completed your performance evaluation with your regional office, this is a good time to schedule an appointment.
    1. Upon approval of your application, ATP will process your authorization fee and execute your agreements.
    2. Within 30 days of approval, you will receive a certificate; a login to the ATP Partners Only Web Site, which includes all of the necessary materials to teach your first class; and an additional e-mail with a login to the Online Course Evaluation System.
