What is the difference between an Esri Technical Certification and GISP Certification?

Esri certifications are based on the use and best practices of Esri products and are technology specific. The Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification is a certified geographic information systems (GIS) professional who has met the standards for ethical conduct and professional practice as established by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). The GISP is not based on or affiliated with any specific product or technology. We do consider these certifications to be complementary and may help a candidate to build a complete professional resume.

What is the difference between the associate and professional certification levels?

The best way to distinguish between the associate and professional certifications would be to review the candidate qualifications and skills measured sections for each of the available certifications. The professional level certifications build upon the knowledge required at the associate level and are considered more advanced.

Are there any requirements or prerequisites to take an Esri certification exam?

There are no prerequisites or requirements for taking the Esri Technical Certification exams, however, as the exams test knowledge that is obtained from a combination of Esri training, formal education and real-world experience, we do recommend between 2-5 years of applicable, hands-on experience using Esri’s ArcGIS software as they are not considered entry-level exams.

Certification
Do Esri certifications expire or require renewals?

Esri certifications do not expire. Exams will be reviewed at each software release to determine if the exam needs to be updated to align with changes in the software. However, once you are certified at the specified version, you will always hold that certification. Over time, the certifications may become outdated as newer versions of the certifications are released. Holding the most current version of a certification will be a personal decision for each candidate.

Certification
What happens when a new exam version is released?

As new software versions are released, our team will evaluate the need to update our exams and will create a new exam if a moderate to major level of change exists. Future Certification versions will no longer be grandfathered or automatically upgraded into new versions, as a new exam version will not be created unless there is a moderate level of impact on the exam.

Course data download issues

Occasionally, files get corrupted during the download process. Delete the file that doesn't open, and download the data again. When downloading and extracting the data, check the path where you are saving the files and make sure that none of the folder names contain spaces or special characters.

'Not a valid win32 application'
This error usually means the file became corrupt during the download process. This commonly occurs when using a wireless internet connection. Delete the file that does not open, and download the data again. If this does not help, download the course data to a different computer with a non-wireless broadband internet connection and then transfer the data to your computer.

'Cannot find downloads2.esri.com'
This error is very common among organizations (especially government agencies) with strict firewall configurations. Your organization may be blocking certain downloads. Contact your network administrator to allow the download of the .exe file or download the data to a computer outside of your organization's firewall (such as your home pc) and then transfer the data to your work computer.

Geoprocessing error: 'Failed to execute'

Geoprocessing tools can fail to run if the folder names in the path where you save your data contain spaces or special characters. For example, you should not save the data to your "My Documents" folder because of the space in the name. If you saved your data to a folder with spaces or special characters, rename it or unzip the data to a new location. It's best to save the files to your C:\Temp or C:\Student folder.

I can't view the live training seminar. Why?

To view the presentation, you need to ensure that JavaScript is enabled and that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. Get Adobe Flash Player.

The video stops and stalls. How can I fix this?

The two most common causes of the presentation pausing is your network connection or you may have too many computer applications open at the same time on your computer.

First, ensure that you meet the system requirements listed above. Second, try closing open applications to free up system resources. You may need to close and reopen your browser and then reconnect to the seminar.

Finally, it is possible that your IT department is throttling your internet connection or video streams. Contact your IT department or internet provider if you consistently have skips or "hiccups" as you are trying to view the seminar.

Training Seminars
I have a high-speed connection, but I still cannot view the recorded seminar.

Your organization may be using a firewall and/or other security measures to prevent you from streaming the video. Contact your IT department for details on any network restrictions that may be in place which are affecting your viewing experience.

Tags: Live, Recorded

Training Seminars
The live training seminar stream appears blocky or of poor quality.

The video stream is compressed before it is streamed live over the internet. This reduces the quality of the image. Additional degradation of the image is possible if your internet connection's bandwidth is being restricted by your IT department.

Tags: Live, Presentation

Training Seminars
The sound quality on the live training seminar is poor.

Both the audio and video components of the presentation are compressed for streaming over the internet. Due to the graphical nature of most of our seminars, we bias our encoding towards the video ? trading some of the audio quality for better video. This allows us to keep the bandwidth of the stream down so that users with slower connections can still view the presentation.

Training Seminars
What are the software requirements need to view a recorded seminar?

To view the presentation, ensure that you have the following:

  • Operating systems: Windows XP, Vista, or 7
  • Web browsers: Internet Explorer 7+ or Mozilla Firefox 3.5+; Windows Media Player plugin is required.
  • Network connection: A minimum speed of 150 kbps is recommended.

Tags: Recorded

Training Seminars
The recorded seminar does not appear to be working.

When you first view the seminar, the presentation window will be black while the presentation buffers. Allow up to 1 minute for the stream to begin.

You may also need to have your IT department modify your organization?s firewall by adding a streaming exception. We broadcast the presentation using two streaming media protocols: HTTP and UDP. You should not need to make any modifications to receive the stream using HTTP (port 80). For optimal viewing, we recommend configuring your network to allow UDP streaming. To enable UDP, open ports 1024-5000 for incoming UDP (only) for the Esri Streaming Service mms://198.102.35.170/*.

Using TCP/IP or HTTP instead of UDP connections may cause the presentation to freeze during periods of heavy network traffic. Reference http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/serve/firewall.aspx and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q189416 for more information.

If we purchase a three-year Training Pass, how are the training days allocated?

Your organization’s staff development needs and GIS project plans should dictate how you allocate your training days. If your training needs will differ year by year, your training day allocation should reflect that. An Esri training specialist can help you determine how many training days are needed each year of a multiyear term to achieve your long-range GIS training goals.

What is the payment process for a multiyear Training Pass?

Organizations may prepay for all years of a multiyear term if they want, but this is not required. When an organization prepays for the entire multiyear term, all training days are immediately available for use. Esri will also invoice annually, at the beginning of each year of a multiyear Training Pass term. When an organization pays per year of a multiyear term, only the training days paid for in each year will be available for use.

What is the role of the Training Pass administrator?

The Training Pass administrator is the person to whom Esri will send all communications and usage reports for the Training Pass account. The Training Pass administrator is responsible for distributing the Training Pass account number. The account number is required when registering individual staff for Esri instructor-led training courses; arranging client-site classes, private classes, and client coaching services; and obtaining a Virtual Campus Annual User License.

My organization has a Training Pass. How do I register for a class?

To register for an instructor-led class, you will need the Training Pass account number, which your organization’s Training Pass administrator can provide. Use the online class schedule to locate a class, enter the desired number of student seats, and click Register. In step 3 of the Instructor-led Class Registration Request process, select Pre-Paid Training in the Payment Method drop-down list and enter your Training Pass account number. Click Next to continue with the registration request.

To organize instructor-led client-site classes, private classes, or client coaching services, contact your Esri training specialist directly or at GIStraining@esri.com.

If your organization used its Training Pass to obtain a Virtual Campus Annual User License and you are interested in taking a web course, find the course you want in the list of courses, then request a course access code from your organization’s Annual User License administrator. Once you have the course access code, login to the Esri Training website, go to the My Virtual Campus Training page, and enter the course access code in the Start a New Web Course box.

I saw a class on the training schedule that I want to attend, but I was told our Training Pass expires before the class date. What can I do?

As long as Esri receives your class registration by the Training Pass term expiration date, you can use the Training Pass account as the payment commitment method, assuming the account has sufficient training days.

Training Pass
Our Training Pass account has a balance of seven training days, but I need nine training days in order to send my staff to a class. How can I get the extra two training days?

You have a couple of options. You could use the existing account balance (seven training days) and apply a different payment method to cover the remaining cost of the training. See our payment options page for a list of other payment methods.

You could also choose to apply the existing Training Pass account balance towards the cost of the training for your staff and purchase a new Training Pass, then redeem training days from the new account to cover the remaining cost of the training. Talk to an Esri training specialist about your projected training needs in the upcoming year to see if purchasing a new Training Pass makes sense.

One of my staff registered for a class and then had to cancel her registration due to a high-priority project. Will the training days automatically be returned to my Training Pass account?

Students who need to cancel their class registration must provide Esri Customer Service with written notice of the cancellation prior to the start of class. After Customer Service is notified, any training days that were committed from your Training Pass account for that class will be released back and available for future use.
