Innovators, Leaders, and Storytellers Driving The Science of Where Forward Recognized at Esri Awards

Redlands, California—Innovation and excellence in the application of geographic information system (GIS) technology are being recognized this week with coveted geospatial awards. Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, acknowledged recipients from around the globe today at the annual Esri User Conference in San Diego, California, with the GIS Digital Transformation, Enterprise GIS, and President’s Awards. On Wednesday, July 12, the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award will be presented.

Award winners announced at today’s Plenary Session included the following:

"This year’s winners have all demonstrated exemplary use of GIS technology to visualize data and deliver intelligence about the interconnected relationships of their geography," said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president. "Through their hard work, we’re able to shine light on how these organizations and individuals are implementing technology to change the world. The winners we recognize are setting the pace for the way we will understand the geography of our world in the future."

The Storytelling with Maps Awards also recognized the top entries from the Esri Storytelling with Maps Contest. Participants submitted multimedia narratives—filled with dynamic maps, descriptive text, videos, and compelling images—in Esri Story Maps apps. The grand prize for best overall story map this year went to Daniel Coe, Washington Geological Survey, for his Washington’s Ice Age Floods app.

Finally, the SAG Award will be presented to organizations from around the world in recognition of their innovative use of GIS to collect data, extrapolate it, make informed decisions, and effect change. One hundred eighty institutions are being acknowledged this year in fields such as local government, agriculture, environmental analysis, emergency response, retail, and water management.
