But GIS is technology that, at its fundamental level, breaks down complexities and reveals patterns over space and time, which can go a long way toward guiding action. To help users leverage the full power of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/location-intelligence\">location intelligence<\/a> to address issues that revolve around race, Esri has launched a new racial equity initiative."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":376891,"image_position":"right","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"\u201cWe have users in every sector that have expressed interest in using GIS to tackle\u00a0racial equity and social\u00a0justice\u2014and that\u2019s not to mention our users who have already been\u00a0doing this work,\u201d said Clinton Johnson, a solution architect at Esri and the racial equity\u00a0team lead. \u201cThough our efforts in this space really started about two years ago, formalizing\u00a0this racial equity initiative demonstrates that Esri is stepping into those conversations\u00a0more intentionally, building solutions and providing resources to help users in the United\u00a0States and around the world take on long-persisting racial disparities.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cSimilar to how GIS is synonymous with environmentalism and conservation and\u00a0how the technology is critical to that movement, we want GIS to be synonymous with social\u00a0justice,\u201d said Margot\u00a0Bordne, an account manager at Esri who\u00a0is part of the racial equity\u00a0team. \u201cThere are so many examples of this already. Many of our users, from governments to\u00a0nonprofits, are doing pioneering work when it comes to addressing systemic racism and\u00a0the myriad problems that stem from that.\u00a0So\u00a0we\u2019re listening to their needs, learning, and\u00a0working with them to make sure everything we do is grounded in best practices for racial\u00a0equity.\u201d\r\n\r\nMuch of the initiative has so far focused on looking at the range of tools Esri already\u00a0has available and developing a racial equity workflow that fuses well-established best\u00a0practices with GIS and location intelligence.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe four major elements of the workflow are to automate and spatially enhance\u00a0community engagement, map and analyze inequities, operationalize racial equity best\u00a0practices, and manage the performance of racial justice initiatives to achieve more\u00a0equitable outcomes,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cAnd this cycle revolves around engaging with various\u00a0stakeholders, from those who experience inequities to community organizations, partners,\u00a0and leaders who are rallying together and helping to address these challenges.\u201d"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":376901,"image_position":"left","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"Esri\u2019s core technology, such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, is key to visualizing\u00a0racial disparities. Organizations can use their own data or curated datasets that Esri is\u00a0making easily accessible through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gis-for-racialequity.hub.arcgis.com\/\">Racial Equity GIS Hub<\/a>.\u00a0When combined with other apps and extensions, such as ArcGIS Insights, ArcGIS Hub,\u00a0ArcGIS Dashboards, and ArcGIS\u00a0StoryMaps, users can explore practical ways to create more\u00a0equitable opportunities and services for people.\r\n\r\n\u201cIf you\u2019re trying to figure out where to place a new hospital or grocery store, you can\u00a0use Esri tools to apply a racial equity lens to the site selection process,\u201d Johnson explained.\u00a0\u201cThis can help you ask questions\u00a0like,\u00a0Will this create benefits for communities of color or\u00a0more barriers?\u201d\r\n\r\nUsing ArcGIS Survey123, for example, an organization can better understand the\u00a0needs of the community it serves. With ArcGIS Hub, it can more easily engage with both\u00a0internal and external stakeholders. ArcGIS Mission and other workforce enablement tools\u00a0from Esri can help the organization automate and track teams that are gathering\u00a0information or taking action out in the community. ArcGIS Dashboards enables the\u00a0organization to show, very clearly, where inequities are and how it is actually working to\u00a0enact change in those places. And ArcGIS\u00a0StoryMaps\u00a0is a great way for the organization to\u00a0formulate and share narratives that revolve around racial equity and social justice.\r\n\r\nEsri has been adding other capabilities to its technology as well. The Racial Equity\u00a0Community Outreach solution leverages ArcGIS Online, Hub, Survey123, and Dashboards to\u00a0help government agencies communicate their progress on defined racial equity initiatives.\u00a0The solution makes it easy to set up a hub site to promote racial equity programs, build\u00a0surveys to collect information about community sentiments, and create a dashboard that\u00a0shows workforce diversity metrics. The new Police Transparency solution is geared toward\u00a0helping law enforcement agencies rebuild the trust of the communities they serve and\u00a0increase transparency. It includes a crime stats dashboard and a public crime map; use-of-force dashboards that can be broken down into categories such as race and ethnicity,\u00a0neighborhood, or officer; a police interaction survey; and a community safety and policing\u00a0satisfaction form."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":376911,"image_position":"right","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"Additionally, Esri is making learn lessons available on the Racial Equity GIS Hub to\u00a0help users build GIS skills aimed specifically at strengthening racial equity and social\u00a0justice.\r\n\r\n\u201cThese learn lessons can help people get familiar with different workflows and\u00a0racial equity topics that GIS can have an impact on,\u201d said\u00a0Bordne.\r\n\r\nSeveral lessons are rooted in health topics, such as mapping breast cancer cases by\u00a0ethnicity and showing which US counties need to improve newborns\u2019 health outcomes.\u00a0Forthcoming learn lessons will likely explore activism, police reform, the digital divide, and\u00a0food access.\r\n\r\nEsri\u2019s racial equity team is also looking to develop solutions that help organizations\u00a0build a pipeline of new job candidates by connecting them with institutions that serve\u00a0underrepresented populations, including historically Black colleges and universities\u00a0(HBCUs); tribal colleges and universities (TCUs), and women\u2019s colleges. And because\u00a0businesses that are owned by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) face\u00a0additional challenges from systemic and structural racism that can make it difficult to\u00a0thrive, Esri plans to eventually release some tools to help promote and support BIPOC-owned ventures.\r\n\r\nWhile in most cases, racial inequities are weaved into long-standing systems and\u00a0structures, there are moments when people\u2019s awareness of these social injustices peaks\u00a0and public outcry demands swift action."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":376921,"image_position":"left","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"\u201cIn these moments, we want our users to be able to act without having to figure out\u00a0all the logistics,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cSo\u00a0we are tapping into a mechanism that we already have\u00a0available\u2014the Esri Disaster Response Program (DRP)\u2014to support customers when they\u00a0need to respond to a situation quickly.\u201d\r\n\r\nThat is not to say that racial inequity is separate from other disasters, such as the\u00a0coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, hurricanes, or wildfires, because crises\u00a0like those repeatedly underscore the disparities that communities of color often face. It\u2019s\u00a0just another example of how applying a racial equity lens to a geographically based\u00a0emergency can help organizations respond more effectively.\r\n\r\n\u201cThis work that we\u2019re doing is important in a different way than anything else we\u2019ve\u00a0ever focused on at Esri,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cWe are responding to a disaster, really, and it\u2019s one\u00a0that\u2019s entwined with so many other issues, from climate change and public health to\u00a0education and the workplace. Racial equity and social justice are central to so much of what\u00a0we do, so we want to provide solutions to help Esri customers around the world who are\u00a0stepping in and taking
