Be sure\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0taken courses that are related to that field. This will help you develop a network of contacts in that industry. And get to know people outside of the university\u00a0who\u2019re\u00a0actually using\u00a0drones and then reach out to them after graduation.\r\n\r\nAlso, be aware of how drones are being used today\u2014inspection, mapping, filming, photography. And\u00a0actually\u00a0get out in the field. Look at what software is available to you as a student and use it to develop various maps or models\u2014maybe some\u00a0deep learning or machine learning applications that show that you have end-to-end experience. Your portfolio should show not only that you can fly a drone, but that you understand why the drone was flown in the first place and how derivatives can be generated from drone data.\r\n\r\n<b>Q: How can new pilots\u00a0identify\u00a0reputable companies?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: A lot of reputable companies post their work on LinkedIn. Conferences are also great. At an Esri conference such as the user conference in San Diego or regional conferences, there will\u00a0almost always\u00a0be a booth with a drone on display. Going to those booths and talking to some of the people about their work in drones is very educational and\u00a0provides an opportunity for you\u00a0to get your name out there as a potential hire."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":773051,"image_position":"right","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<b>Q: What are the most in-demand technical skills?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: Understanding the ArcGIS suite is\u00a0really important.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0vitally important to be able to understand quickly why a drone is being flown in the first place, because that can\u00a0determine\u00a0which software to use. It could be ArcGIS Drone2Map, Site Scan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro, or something else. And then there\u2019s oriented imagery and full-motion video\u2014which is the best approach? Also,\u00a0having an understanding of\u00a0how different wavelengths of light can be processed is important. A\u00a0really common\u00a0one is thermal, so knowing thermography is important.\r\n\r\n<b>Q: What emerging niches should new professionals explore?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: With the advent of Part 108 and FAA regulations changing with the technology, something that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0seeing deployed across cities, construction sites, and utilities is drones in a box being used for autonomous data collection, with no human in the loop.\r\n\r\nIn many cities and in public safety, there\u2019s a concept called \u201cdrones as a first responder,\u201d which is putting drones in a box in several locations in a city, and if there\u2019s an emergency call or an alarm somewhere, a drone goes out first to scope it out versus waiting for a person to drive there. This is starting to be deployed in every major US city,\u00a0and you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need to be a police officer or a firefighter\u00a0in order to\u00a0be involved\u2014they\u2019re\u00a0looking for individuals who understand drone technology."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":773052,"image_position":"left","orientation":"vertical","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<b>Q: How can pilots stay current with technical advances and regulations?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA:\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important to build out a network of\u00a0people, because\u00a0you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0learn everything yourself. In the United States, the best professional organization is AUVSI, which stands for Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International. Joining your local chapter will help keep yourself in the loop.\r\n\r\nAlso, keep an eye out for new data products like Gaussian splatting, which is a brand-new layer type in ArcGIS, or tools for mapping more complex features and not just flat ground. Esri is adding new layers all the time, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to know what these layers can do in imagery and remote sensing.\r\n\r\n<b>Q: What soft skills are crucial?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: Curiosity is\u00a0a really important\u00a0soft skill because the technology is always changing. Safety is key, so you\u00a0have to\u00a0understand your own personal limitations. And communication will always be important because stakeholders\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0necessarily always know what drones can do or\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0do."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":773053,"image_position":"right","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<b>Q: How do you think drone-GIS integration will evolve, and what does this mean for careers?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: Drone technology is going to continue to get more autonomous and the sensors are going to become more advanced. So, as drones become more autonomous, less energy is going to be spent on how to fly a drone in order to get the data that you want, and more energy will go into what flight plans and sensors are required to get the end result. The new career opportunities will involve understanding workflows, knowing where AI can and\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be helpful, and knowing how best to schedule and plan autonomous flights to get the best data for analysis.&gt;\r\n\r\n<b>Q: What are some common misconceptions about drone piloting careers?<\/b>\r\n\r\nA: One is that drone pilots\u2019 main job is to manually fly drones with a controller in their hands.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0increasingly not the case.\u00a0The majority of\u00a0my time as a drone pilot is spent planning drone flights and understanding\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0the data\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0trying to get out of the project. Staying curious is important and so is staying\u00a0humble, because\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0never going to know everything. This technology is\u00a0really exciting, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also important to stay\u00a0levelheaded\u00a0about what can and\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be done with the technology.\r\n\r\nThe best way to increase your compensation or to be on the upper side of the salary band is to have a well-rounded set of skills. Organizations will pay top dollar for somebody who they can trust to not only manage the flying of the drone but manage the fleets, the data after the fact, and then to understand how the data will be
