When\u00a0changing style<\/a>, the choices you see are determined by the nature of your data.\r\n\r\nOnce you have decided on the initial form of your features\u2014for example, selecting either circles or colors to show population\u2014you can to change their appearance, such as choosing colors, line weights, and transparency. You can create interesting effects by duplicating layers and applying different styles to each layer. In the tip below, you will learn how to create a glowing double ring effect.\r\n\r\nWhen you use proportional circle maps, the large circles may cover small circles, so it may be difficult to view the map details beneath them. Using hollow circles, which are outlines with no fill, helps to solve this problem.\r\n\r\nYou can also overlap layers using different colors and transparencies to create a glowing double ring effect, as detailed in this tip. Use the provided sample map, or use your own map with layers having numeric values suitable for the\u00a0Counts and Amounts (Size)<\/a>\u00a0drawing style. The sample map includes the original layer (left) plus the copied layers showing the result (right).\r\n\r\n\"The\r\n\r\nStep 1.<\/strong>\u00a0Sign in to your ArcGIS Online account. Open the\u00a0sample map<\/a>\u00a0(or your own map) and create two copies of the layer. Click Contents. To copy a layer, open the context menu then click More Options and choose Copy.\r\n\r\n\"tip2\"\r\n\r\nStep 2.<\/strong>\u00a0Using the first copy of the layer, click Change Style.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nStep 3.<\/strong>\u00a0Choose\u00a0POP2015<\/strong>\u00a0from the attribute list. Any numeric field can be used.\r\n\r\nStep 4.<\/strong>\u00a0Choose\u00a0Counts and Amounts (Size)<\/strong>\u00a0as the drawing style.\r\n\r\nStep 5.<\/strong>\u00a0Click\u00a0OPTIONS<\/strong>\u00a0to change the style.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nStep 6.<\/strong>\u00a0In the Change Style text box, click Symbols to change symbols.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nStep 7.<\/strong>\u00a0Click Fill to adjust the symbol's fill properties.\r\n\r\nStep 8.<\/strong>\u00a0Set the fill for No color, making the interior of the shape transparent.\r\n\r\nStep 9.<\/strong>\u00a0Click OUTLINE to adjust the symbol's outline properties.\r\n\r\nStep 10.<\/strong>\u00a0Choose white for the outline. Adjust the line width to 1 pixel.\r\n\r\nStep 11.<\/strong>\u00a0Click OK to save your changes.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nClick OK and Done in the subsequent panels to accept your changes for the layer. You're now finished with the first layer.\r\n\r\nStep 12.<\/strong>\u00a0Begin a similar process with the second copy of the layer, following steps 1\u20137 above.\r\n\r\nStep 13.<\/strong>\u00a0Choose No color again for the fill.\r\n\r\nStep 14.<\/strong>\u00a0Click OUTLINE and select a color for the outline other than white Try a medium blue, for example, as it offers a nice contrast.\r\n\r\nStep 15.<\/strong>\u00a0Adjust the line width to 6 or 8 pixels or so. Click OK.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nStep 16.<\/strong>\u00a0Click OK and Done in the subsequent panels to accept your changes for the layer. You've now completed symbol changes for the second layer.\r\n\r\nYour map should look similar to this:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nExperiment with additional layers and different widths, colors, and transparency settings to achieve the desired effect.\r\n\r\n\r\n
