In this tutorial, you\u2019ll view a feature layer owned by Esri and change some of its layer properties. This example involves building a set of maps of Switzerland for a tourism business\u2019s website. There will be a different map for each season, since different attractions are popular at different times of the year.\r\n\r\nTo begin, you\u2019ll need a feature layer of the boundary of Switzerland. You\u2019ll use the World Countries layer available in ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World and filter it to only show Switzerland. Then, you\u2019ll save the filtered layer as a new item in your ArcGIS Online account so that you can reuse it consistently in all your maps for the website.\r\n

Step 1. Filter the layer<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n1. Click the following item page link: World Countries<\/a>. (The terms of use for this feature layer, which is owned by Esri, allow it to be used in your maps because you have an ArcGIS subscription.)\r\n\r\n2. At the top of the item page, click Open in Map Viewer<\/strong>."},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":746722,"image_position":"center","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"3. If necessary, on the ribbon, click Sign In<\/strong> to sign in with your ArcGIS organizational account. If you don\u2019t have an ArcGIS organizational account, see options for software access<\/a>.\r\n\r\nA map of the world appears. Now you\u2019ll filter the layer to show only Switzerland.\r\n\r\n4. On the Settings<\/strong> (light) toolbar, click the Filter<\/strong> (If the Settings<\/strong> toolbar is unavailable, in the Layers<\/strong> pane, click World Countries<\/strong>. Your website will include several maps of Switzerland, each featuring different thematic data. Instead of applying the filter every time, you\u2019ll save a copy of the layer that is prefiltered.\r\n\r\n8. In the Layers<\/strong> pane, on the World Countries<\/strong> layer, click the Options<\/strong> button (the three horizontal dots). In the Save as<\/strong> window, for Title<\/strong>, type \u201cSwitzerland\u201d, followed by your initials (for example, Switzerland XX).\r\n\r\nNote that you cannot create two layers in an ArcGIS organization with the same name. Adding your initials to a layer name ensures that other people in your organization can also complete this tutorial. Once a layer has been created, you can rename it in the map to remove your initials, which will not affect the name of the underlying data layer.\r\n\r\nThe Tags<\/strong> are already filled in with information from the source layer. You\u2019ll adapt the Summary<\/strong> to include a direct link to the source layer.\r\n\r\n10. For Summary<\/strong>, delete the existing text. Click Save<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nA new feature layer item is created in your My Content<\/strong> list, but nothing on the map appears to change.\r\n\r\n12. On the Settings<\/strong> toolbar, click the Properties<\/strong> button.\r\n\r\n13. In the Properties<\/strong> pane, expand the Information<\/strong> section. The Source layer<\/strong> is listed as Switzerland [XX] \/ World Countries<\/strong>. This is the new feature layer item that you created in your ArcGIS Online account. This feature layer is owned by you.\r\n\r\nA feature layer does not contain data. Instead, it contains a reference to a data source, plus layer properties. The Switzerland<\/strong> layer references the same data source as the World Countries<\/strong> layer it was created from. Step 2. Configure layer properties<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nNext, you\u2019ll change some of the layer\u2019s appearance properties. You could click Open in Map Viewer<\/strong> and make the changes there. However, those changes would be saved in a web map, so they would only control how the layer appears in that map. For your project, you want to ensure that layer properties are set consistently across multiple maps. So, instead, you\u2019ll make your changes on the item page\u2019s Visualization<\/strong> tab. These changes will be saved in the feature layer. They will affect how the layer appears in every map.\r\n

On the map, zoom to Switzerland.\r\n\r\nYou\u2019ll change the layer\u2019s appearance so that the basemap can be seen underneath the layer.\r\n\r\n3. If necessary, on the Contents<\/strong> (dark) toolbar, click the Layers<\/strong> button to open the Layers<\/strong> pane.\r\n\r\n4. On the Settings<\/strong> toolbar, click the Properties<\/strong> button.\r\n\r\n5.     Step 3. Use the layer in a map<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nThe Switzerland feature layer is now ready to add to the seasonal maps. You\u2019ll add it to the winter-themed map first and change its color to blue. You\u2019ll also confirm that all other properties are controlled by the source layer, rather than the map.\r\n\r\n1. This means that if you change the Blending<\/strong>, Filter<\/strong>, Pop-ups<\/strong>, or any other property of the source layer, those changes will appear on this map.\r\n\r\nIt helps to know where properties are stored so that you can predict how they will behave. In this case, you own the source layer, so layer property changes won\u2019t happen unexpectedly. Note that since you don\u2019t own the data, data changes could still happen unexpectedly.\r\n\r\nYou can use the feature layer to control the properties you want to be consistent across all maps, and you can set the properties you want to be different separately in each map.\r\n\r\n14. Close the Layer properties status<\/strong> window.
