What we are hoping to do at Ten Across is to illuminate them and work together towards proactive responses and the necessary adaptability,\u201d Reiter said.\r\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Making the Case for Ten Across<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nReiter was inspired to create Ten Across having lived in two cities with existential water issues\u2014New Orleans and Phoenix\u2014one has too much and the other faces scarcity. He worked with colleagues at Arizona State University (ASU) and the Water Institute, to host Ten Across\u2019 first major summit in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.\r\n\r\n\u201cWhat was fascinating about this event is that we had people from very different locations on the corridor experiencing different challenges, and yet they found common denominator issues, such as policy, infrastructure, climate science, and leadership at various levels of government,\u201d Reiter said.\u00a0 With this proof-of-concept, three additional summits followed in Phoenix, Houston, and Los Angeles.\r\n\r\nWith a background in architecture and planning, Reiter leads\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/universitycityexchange.asu.edu\/\">ASU\u2019s University City Exchange<\/a>\u00a0to support community-based urban and environmental projects. In these initiatives, just as with Ten Across, Reiter embraces a place-based approach informed by GIS technology.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe work to combine lived experience and supporting data; both are true and valuable,\u201d Reiter said. \u201cWhile sharing personal experiences is important to us, it\u2019s visualizing the data and its tie to place that tells us something more.\u201d"},{"acf_fc_layout":"gallery","gallery_images":[655522,655512,655502,655492,655482,655472]},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expanding the Program and its Lessons <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Fall 2022, Ten Across and the ASU College of Global Futures joined forces to launch <a href=\"https:\/\/10across.com\/course\/\">Resilient American Futures: An Academic Road Trip<\/a>, an online course focusing on sustainability and resilience along the I-10 corridor. Students study 12 major cities and specific challenges like water, energy, transportation, and important societal shifts. In the process, students are introduced to nearly 70 academic disciplines and career paths. For example:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>While exploring the Port of Los Angeles, students learn about the complexities of commerce and supply chain challenges, gaining insight into sustainable solutions for these systems.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>For Las Cruces, New Mexico, students look at production and distribution of the city\u2019s famous chiles to understand modern food systems. They learn about genetics, cultural anthropology, and agribusiness, and analyze sustainability issues in the face of local water scarcity.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>From the Permian Basin to Houston, students investigate the present fossil fuel industry, renewable energy alternatives, and touch upon microeconomics, law, and global management.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In Mobile, Alabama, students learn about protecting waterways to support ecotourism and the seafood industry. The program covers marine biology, nonprofit management, and ethnic studies.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>For Jacksonville, Florida, students learn about the largest city in land area in the US and its future plans, recognizing the importance of urban planning, sustainable development, and public services in building resilient cities.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":655542,"image_position":"center","orientation":"horizontal","hyperlink":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\">ArcGIS StoryMaps<\/a> for an interactive learning experience with web maps, videos, and digital media. Benjamin Stanley, who leads the course, worked with his team to create 50 distinct maps to examine issues across place and time. \u201cUsing sustainability issues in real world places as the starting point of class material\u2014as expressed through popular media narratives\u2014allows an instructor to begin teaching as close as possible to a student\u2019s own lived experience. Once they have a concrete, place-based example of something, and can relate it to their own life, they seem more motivated to learn the underlying academic concepts and pursue additional learning on their own.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the popularity of <a href=\"https:\/\/10across.com\/course\/\">Resilient American Futures: An Academic Road Trip<\/a>, Ten Across is developing additional courses using data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/home\/\">ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World<\/a>. With journalism being a key component of the initiative, Ten Across is working with ASU\u2019s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, to equip future journalists with GIS mapping skills to enhance their reporting.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents today have many reasons to feel despondent about their futures,\u201d Reiter said. \u201cWe wanted to offer an opportunity to supply them with the knowledge and tools to actively participate in solving these problems.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often the problem-solving work begins in the face of a disruption\u2014such as the closure of a major stretch of I-10 in Los Angeles. But Reiter aims for a more proactive approach, using GIS to inspire positive change through Ten Across and ASU.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are six years into this journey, and we are working to empower future generations to make necessary and transformational changes now,\u201d Reiter said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how GIS comes up in nearly every conversation.
