It\u2019s also a prime example of how innovative technology can help preserve heritage while building for the future.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrexham Association Football Club is the third-oldest football club still in existence. Its Racecourse Ground is the world\u2019s oldest international football stadium still in use. When the club changed hands, modernizing the stadium was a top priority. With Hollywood star owners documenting their efforts in an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Welcome_to_Wrexham\">FX docuseries<\/a>, the stadium played a lead character.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-12\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club needed more seating and the stadium\u2019s end stand had become unsafe and was decommissioned in 2007. The rebuild called for careful construction, as the stadium tightly knits into the neighborhood, nearby roads, and the adjacent rail station. The Kop stand project used the context provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/what-is-gis\/overview\">geographic information system (GIS) technology<\/a> from Esri combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/aec\/overview\/gis-and-bim\">building information modeling (BIM)<\/a> from Autodesk to take on the challenge.<\/p>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"gallery","gallery_images":[750292,750322,750342]},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For residents of Wrexham, the stadium weaves deeply into the community fabric. People still talk about the 1934 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gresford_disaster\">Gresford disaster<\/a> when 266 coal miners died in a gas explosion. Many had traded their shifts so they could watch a football match the next day. The new stadium design pays tribute to Wrexham\u2019s roots in mining and brickmaking, and player uniforms honor the lost miners with a \u201c1934\u201d patch.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-14\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt's really about preserving the community and heritage of the people,\u201d said Sarah Widdowfield, UK and Ireland digital hub manager at Ramboll, the engineering and architecture firm behind the stadium\u2019s redesign. \u201cThat sense of identity is so deeply rooted that any drastic change would have risked alienating the very supporters the project is meant to serve.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-15\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Piloting the Combination of BIM and GIS<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Widdowfield and the team at Ramboll, the stadium project integrated the past with the future while also affording the opportunity to try the integration of BIM with GIS.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-17\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the first project where we put together a team, showed examples, connected data between Autodesk and Esri platforms using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-geobim\/overview\">ArcGIS GeoBIM<\/a>, and walked through it with the project team to get feedback and ideas,\u201d said Joe Segretto, geospatial and transforming delivery senior manager at Ramboll.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-18\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key benefits became clear as the pilot progressed.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-19\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, different professional teams worked in isolation, using specialized tools that didn\u2019t easily share information. But the technology integration supported smooth collaboration.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-20\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArcGIS GeoBIM allowed environmental teams to continue to use their GIS tools to collect site data and connect to the Autodesk Construction Cloud where all our design people work,\u201d Segretto said. \u201cThat brings together two different teams that may not have talked to each other before.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-21\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The value goes far beyond simple convenience. The team identified three main areas where ArcGIS GeoBIM enhanced their work:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li class=\"ai-optimize-22\"><em>Visualization<\/em> with the capability to pull many BIM models together into one place<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"ai-optimize-23\"><em>Integration<\/em> of design data and environmental data<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"ai-optimize-24\"><em>Issue tracking<\/em> to resolve any conflicts in the design before construction began<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-25\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing the BIM models integrated in the context of the site within GIS helped bring designs and different project teams together.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-26\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot demonstrated how the technologies combined were greater than the sum of their parts. \u201cIt really has sold the capabilities of GIS and BIM integration in the teams,\u201d Widdowfield said. \u201cIt\u2019s put it to the front of people\u2019s minds that there\u2019s a new integrated way to work.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-27\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Providing Contextual Understanding<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-28\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most profound benefits was the ability to visualize designs for the 5,500-person-capacity Kop stand at one end of the stadium. The design and construction teams could view the project in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/capabilities\/3d-gis\/features\/3d-data-management\">full geographic context in 2D and 3D<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-29\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPreviously, if you wanted to visualize the designs, you would have a list of files and folders. You could look at individual BIM models, but the visualization was more focused on design,\u201d Segretto said.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-30\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This limited view meant designers couldn\u2019t easily understand how new construction would interact with the surrounding environment. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be able to see this in context with everything else around it,\u201d he added.<\/p>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"gallery","gallery_images":[750392,750382,750372,750362]},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p class=\"ai-optimize-31\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environmental context represents another key advantage of taking a holistic GIS and BIM approach.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-32\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stadium project took a practical and strategic approach to sustainability. Nature-based solutions were used to manage stormwater runoff. The Kop stand design incorporated solar panels for on-site energy generation, and the site was enhanced to support biodiversity. The design also accommodates future infrastructure needs, such as upgraded power systems, and includes flexibility for hospitality space upgrades as the club advances through the football ranks.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-33\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur ecologists use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-field-maps\/overview\">ArcGIS Field Maps<\/a> to go out and conduct species surveys and habitat assessments,\u201d Widdowfield said. \u201cThey\u2019re identifying what the habitats are like there currently, and then they do a postdevelopment Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-34\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramboll staff are proud of the firm\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramboll.com\/en-us\/our-strategy\">commitment to a sustainable future<\/a>. The tight integration of GIS and BIM tools will help them assess the green design\u2019s positive impacts on the environment.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-35\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An immediate positive impact for Ramboll came from stakeholder feedback for the GIS-BIM integration pilot.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-36\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery single person that we\u2019ve showed this to has gone, \u2018Wow!\u2019\u201d Widdowfield said. \u201cHaving the capability to look at this information together in such a usable platform has sparked excitement.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-37\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the stadium, Ramboll is buzzing with conversations about how they can apply these capabilities to other projects. \u201cThe more people start working with this and seeing what\u2019s possible, the more questions they\u2019re asking,\u201d Segretto said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s always about, \u2018This is great, and how can I do the next thing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-38\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A Hollywood Tale of Future-Forward Construction<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-39\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wrexham stadium project signifies the future of infrastructure\u2014how we can build and maintain facilities and services while honoring community heritage.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-40\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Wrexham, the stadium\u2019s transformation connects directly to broader revitalization efforts. \u201cThey\u2019re looking at transport, regeneration of the city center, and the non-match-day amenities that include a hotel, retail shops, and room for offices,\u201d Widdowfield said.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-41\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the struggling club in 2020, they brought not just financial resources but also powerful marketing expertise.
