{"id":1837,"date":"2013-02-08T09:19:16","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T17:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/insider\/?p=1837"},"modified":"2013-02-08T09:19:16","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T17:19:16","slug":"a-250-year-plan-for-the-planet","status":"publish","type":"insider","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/insider\/a-250-year-plan-for-the-planet","title":{"rendered":"A 250-Year Plan for the Planet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four years ago, designer and technologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geodesignsummit.com\/agenda\/featured-speakers.html\">Bran Ferren<\/a> issued a challenge during the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geodesignsummit.com\/\">Geodesign Summit<\/a>: Become better storytellers using geodesign.<br \/>\nFerren, the chief creative officer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appliedminds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Applied Minds LLC<\/a>, returned to Esri in January to <a href=\"http:\/\/video.esri.com\/watch\/2119\/five-minutes-into-the-future-an-argument-for-taking-a-longer-view\" target=\"_blank\">keynote <\/a>at the fourth Geodesign Summit and reiterate his first call to action and deliver another: Develop a 250-year plan for the planet enabled by geodesign to create a vision of the future.<br \/>\n\u201cGeodesign combines geography and data with modeling, simulation, and visualization to tell stories and (show) the consequences of your actions,\u201d Ferren told more than 260 architects, urban and transportation planners, GIS and design professionals, educators, and others at the most well-attended Geodesign Summit to date. He sees great potential for geodesign to ultimately help find solutions to complex problems. \u201cIt is still in the shiny object stage but it will be <em>very <\/em>important,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1841\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1841\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2013\/02\/Bran2.jpg\" alt=\"Bran Ferren at the 2013 Geodesign Summit\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bran Ferren at the 2013 Geodesign Summit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nGeodesign technology will mature naturally much like other technologies such as GPS did. But meanwhile, says Ferren, in this era of short attention spans, people need to start thinking far, far into the future to create a problem-solving template that can be built upon over time. \u201cIf we are going to address these big global issues facing us\u2014whether that\u2019s disease, education, fresh water, war, or global warming\u2014you actually have to take a long view,\u201d Ferren said. \u201cFor this planet, we need\u2014pick a number\u2014a 250-year plan.\u201d<br \/>\nFerren said questions need to be posed such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is your current state of affairs or the topic you are worried about?<\/li>\n<li>What is your desired end state?<\/li>\n<li>How are you going to get there?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cI argue that just having the discipline to sit down for a day and think about that will change your whole thought process,\u201d Ferren said.   \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean you are going to know exactly what the future is, but having a sense that in 250 years, you would like to address these things at least gives you an intellectual template and road map to test your ideas against.\u201d<br \/>\nThis process will be collaborative, too, according to Ferren.  \u201cThat\u2019s the power of geodesign,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s this network extension of shared intelligence where the insights of individuals can be shared among others, and that can be used as the foundation to build upon.\u201d<br \/>\nFerren also said that geodesigners in the future will be entrusted with the same power over life and death that doctors have today, because the decisions they make will be critical to humans and other species. \u201cThe mistakes you make in planning and designing our cities may take 100 years until someone understands the consequences of those actions. The Hippocratic Oath for geodesign: First, do no harm,\u201d he said. \u201cUnderstand what you are doing and the effect\u2014if you know this is going to do long-term damage, it is not okay to do it. We aren\u2019t on this Earth very long. It\u2019s a mere blip. Try to leave it a little better than how we found it.\u201d<br \/>\nGeodesign Summit attendee Juan C.
