Location analytics gives global manufacturers new visibility into each stop on the way to the shopper<\/em> <\/strong>
\nWhen pork was found in Ikea\u2019s moose lasagna<\/a> in Europe, as you can imagine, this had significant ramifications with both the Jewish and Islamic communities.
\nCadbury<\/a> suffered a major brand debacle because swine DNA was found in candy bars for sale in Malaysia\u2014a predominantly Muslim nation.
\nThen of course, the yuck<\/strong> factor, otherwise known as food fraud: horsemeat<\/a> in beef products throughout Europe, the fact that most of the olive oil<\/a>, honey<\/a>, and maple syrup<\/a> is not what it says it is.
\nWhat if we could see every touch point and monitor all the processes that are necessary at this vast global scale to get that chicken nugget safely<\/em><\/strong> from a meat packing plant to your toddler\u2019s table?

What does it take to quench your thirst with that refreshing bubbly mineral water from Italy?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nSound intimidating?
\nIt shouldn\u2019t. Because successful companies are doing this now.<\/strong>

\n<\/em>Operating Blind Leads to Breakdown<\/strong>
\nNearly half of global manufacturers say<\/a> they don\u2019t have any visibility past their tier one suppliers, and only nine percent of the 335 respondents of the study said they had complete visibility.

The volume of imports and exports is staggering\u2014what\u2019s keeping your food supply safe?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWhat does this mean? It means that manufacturers don\u2019t know what is happening throughout their supply chain. Non-transparency leads to breakdown.
\nFirst is the safety<\/strong> issue: last year the news reported<\/a> that fecal matter has been found in more than 80% of ground turkey in 21 states across the United States. Salmonella outbreaks are a continuing problem; this year alone the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported<\/a> outbreaks on nut butters, chia powder, chicken, and cheese. The latest debacle is the expired meat<\/a> being supplied in McDonald\u2019s, Papa John\u2019s, Burger King, Starbucks, KFC, and Pizza Huts across Asia.
\nSecond is the cultural<\/strong> and<\/strong> religious<\/strong> standpoint: In Islam, only halal foods are allowed; in Judaism, food must be kosher. Both do not allow the consumption of pork. And Hinduism cannot allow the consumption of beef.

\n<\/em>Location Analytics to the Rescue<\/strong>
\nLooking at the entire supply chain\u2014whether it\u2019s the pig that winds up as a hotdog at a local food joint, or the cacao beans that are nicely wrapped in gold foil at the supermarket, and including all the various forms they take in between from the beginning to the end\u2014makes sense on a map. Because it all happens somewhere.

Manitoba, Quebec, Canada implemented a mandatory program that assigned a unique number to places where livestock and poultry are grown after an outbreak of avian influenza in British Columbia in 2004. That outbreak caused more than $500 million in damages.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nUsing GIS<\/a>, companies can visually track equipment, personnel, animals, and crops and be automatically notified if there are problems. As assets are tracked, events can be visually analyzed over time so problem areas can be identified and corrected. Any deficiencies identified during inspections can generate new work orders for maintenance and repair. This information can be integrated with project management and budgeting tools, using location analytics<\/a>, so operational and maintenance expenses can be managed and accounted for.
\nSupply chains are being optimized and reformatted as new innovations occur every day. Introducing GIS<\/a> and location analytics<\/a>, technologies that are being used by millions of organizations throughout the world for the past three decades, should be one of them.
