How can the industry keep up?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Kevin Spacey pitched <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Cards_%28U.S._TV_series%29\">House of Cards<\/a> to broadcasters, they asked him to do a pilot.<\/p>\n<p>When Kevin Spacey pitched House of Cards to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\">Netflix<\/a>, they did not ask him to do a pilot. They wanted to know many episodes he wanted to produce. Netflix was able to ask that question with confidence because they already had knowledge from data and analysis that would support their decision to air the show.<\/p>\n<h2>From \u201cWE\u201d to \u201cME\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4251\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4251\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/01\/67314_Blog_illus3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"341\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Same location, different devices means everyone can watch something different.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TV has shifted from a \u201cWE\u201d to a \u201cME\u201d experience. Viewing has gone from a group activity\u2014people gathering together on a couch to watch a show\u2014to an individual experience because people can now download and stream content directly to smart devices.  But as the TV experience becomes more versatile and device independent, how can the industry best manage this complexity?<br \/>\nThey need to start thinking about TV in a whole different way.<\/p>\n<h2>Understand \u201cME\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The TV industry as a whole is a laggard in terms of data analytics. In today\u2019s world, every retailer, coffee shop, and insurance company is offering customized offers, coupons, and more based on their customers\u2019 profiles and location. But the TV industry is still delivering content based on yesterday\u2019s rating with non-targeted ads. It\u2019s not too surprising that the TV industry is constantly losing ad marketing dollars to other mediums.<\/p>\n<h2>Distribution Paradigm Change<\/h2>\n<p>This distribution paradigm shift is a boon to the industry. Why?<\/p>\n<p>As digital offers from TV channels grow\u2014episodes provided through the network\u2019s web site or streaming apps, for example\u2014the more they can understand their viewers and deliver the right content directly to their audience. Because for every one of those viewers and devices, there is data\u2014a lot of data. Information about everything each viewer watched, as well as where and when, can be collected. Every pair of eyes watching delivered content is now a known point of sale.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4252\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4252\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4252\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/01\/POS_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Real-time information can be collected so media can understand exactly who is watching what.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>GIS for the TV Industry<\/h2>\n<p>Show producers and distributors have been hungry for this type of information for a long time, but couldn\u2019t get it just a generation ago. They have gone from not understanding who was in a room watching TV during the \u201cWE\u201d era, to knowing every one of their viewers glued to their smart devices in the \u201cME\u201d era.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4253\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4253\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/01\/67314_Blog_illus2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"485\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maps can give a better understand quickly of data than simple reports and spreadsheets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This generates some very <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/products\/arcgis-capabilities\/big-data\">big data<\/a>. It can be overwhelming.  Here are three ways that GIS can help:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Locate Data on a Map.<\/strong> A map is far more intuitive than a spreadsheet of information.  It provides quick visual understanding of viewer and customer data based on where viewership is located.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enrich the Map.<\/strong> In addition to visualizing data, different attributes can be layered on a map. Demographic data, purchase frequency (such as video on demand [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Video_on_demand\">VOD<\/a>] offerings), life style information (including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/data-tools.html\">Census data<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/landing-pages\/tapestry\">Esri Tapestry<\/a> segmentation data, and expenditure data), and more can be viewed together on a map to see how viewing preferences differ from place to place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perform Map-Driven Analysis.<\/strong> Customers can be acquired and kept through customized VOD offerings and ads because we know who wants what and where they are located. How do we know this? Because we can ask questions, aggregate and really understand all of our data easily.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4254\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4254\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/01\/Tapestry-and-media-types_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Viewing how people watch media along with segmentation data gives immediate perspective to information.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Those in the media industry who take advantage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/location-intelligence\">location intelligence<\/a> across multiple platforms will be able to ride the wave of digital entertainment without getting lost in the swell.<\/p>\n<p>Make discoveries that graphs, charts, and other technologies won\u2019t reveal. Understand where viewers are and provide better content to everyone.
