The answer: Show \u2018em some data!<br \/>\nData about the types of people who live, work, and shop near a site is like gold to business owners, revealing incredibly valuable intelligence. To learn where a new site can be successful, business owners need answers to three basic questions about an area population:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who are they?<\/li>\n<li>What do they do?<\/li>\n<li>How do they spend their money?<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWho are they? (Demographics)<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/esri-demographics\/data\/updated-demographics.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Esri Demographics<\/a> provides data about a population such as age, gender, income, housing, family type, education, and employment. This kind of information can provide business owners with important details about the people who live near a potential business site and help them answer questions such as, Are people in the area old, single, married with children, or married with no kids? Are they wealthy or struggling to get by? Are they new arrivals, or have they lived in the area for a long time?<br \/>\nThis type of information not only enables Economic Development staff to better promote the site to prospective businesses, but also helps to show prospects a real and quantifiable description of the types of customers they need.<br \/>\nAnalysts can provide maps based on the demographics of age, income, and household type to locate where most of these people live. The senior population could be a secondary target, and may be considered as another source of revenue. Additional revenue could also be generated by the daytime population that works near a site, but might live outside the area. The information about household income illustrated on a map is a good start; however, for more detail about the preferences and lifestyles of the population, lifestyle data can be added to demographics.<br \/>\nEconomic Development staff could easily see which types of businesses might fit into the site, based on the median household income of the local population. Conversely, maps can also enable development companies to locate areas where customers with their targeted income ranges could be found.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWhat are they like? (Lifestyles)<\/strong><br \/>\nLifestyle data adds a new perspective to demographics. Lifestyle data, often referred to as segmentation, is based on the principle that people with similar tastes and lifestyles will seek others with the same tastes; i.e., singles are less likely to gravitate to suburban neighborhoods of married couples with children.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4445\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/02\/ed11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4445\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/02\/ed11-1024x588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This map of Los Angeles County shows the LifeMode summary groups in Esri\u2019s Tapestry Segmentation system to provide a broad overview of markets. Here, four areas have been chosen that represent the clustering of lifestyles and geography that may be suitable for a particular type of business.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nUsing Esri\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/tapestry\">Tapestry Segmentation<\/a> data to identify the types of neighborhoods in the area, Economic Development staff might learn that residents like sports; watch movies at home; eat out fairly often at family-type restaurants; communicate via cell phone; go online for information, banking, and shopping; and drive moderately priced vehicles. Adding this information to their analysis along with maps of targeted neighborhoods enables the staff to narrow the choice of prospective businesses to pitch and increase their chances for success.<br \/>\nIncome ranges and lifestyle criteria can be used to identify as a possible areas for business expansion. Armed with lifestyle data, Economic Development staff could then show potential businesses not only the demographics of the targeted area, but also their lifestyle and media preferences. This information provides valuable insight into the likelihood that area consumers would patronize the business and the best ways to communicate with them.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nHow do they spend their money? (Spending data)<\/strong><br \/>\nSpending data provides even more detail about how a local population spends its disposable income. Esri\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/esri-demographics\/data\/consumer-spending.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Spending<\/a> data compares area spending by household for a variety of categories to the national averages. <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/esri-demographics\/data\/market-potential.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Market Potential<\/a> data measures area demand versus national averages. Economic Development staff can study the indexes in each database to determine actual spending by adult or household, and the potential demand for different categories.<br \/>\nLocation is a critical element for any site selection or trade area analysis. Studying the competitive landscape is necessary to ensure that a new site won\u2019t cannibalize current spots. <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/esri-demographics\/data\/business.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Business Locations<\/a> data is a valuable asset to find businesses by industry sector and can reveal a wealth of information about these businesses. Drivetime\u2014how far people would drive to patronize a prospective business\u2014is also a valuable consideration.<br \/>\nViewing the Tapestry Segmentation map and the other information, Economic Development staff can quickly and immediately see the types of companies that might be interested in a particular site. Staff can then compile a list of potential businesses that meet the criteria. In turn, companies can see locations of areas with the most targeted consumers, instead of researching the entire county.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<strong><br \/>\nData Generates Business Success<\/strong><br \/>\nThese three data types\u2014demographics, lifestyle, and spending\u2014can provide answers to the \u201cWho, What, and How\u201d questions that business owners can use to take a quick look at potential sites. Demographic data supplies information about \u201cwho\u201d the local population is; lifestyle data answers the \u201cwhat\u201d question about activities and media preferences; and spending data shows \u201chow\u201d area consumers are actually spending by household. Armed with this insight, the locations of empty sites meeting the owners\u2019 specified criteria could be further researched and visited.<br \/>\nUsing demographics, lifestyle, and spending data in this way enables companies to hone in on only the sites that fit their criteria and avoid the \u201cscattershot\u201d approach by having to investigate an entire area.
