The culture of our agency is merely a reflection of the work we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2014Larry Norris, CEO of Lewis Communications, Matthew Porter, Lewis Communications: &#8220;Putting People First,&#8221; <\/em>Communication Arts<em>, March\/April 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been walking through your neighborhood and seen a geyser of water shooting up from a broken sprinkler head, or a fallen tree branch lying in the middle of the street, or a tagger\u2019s graffiti scrawled across a bus stop shelter, and wondered how you could notify the right people to come and take care of it? It\u2019s common that people lack the tools to facilitate community engagement.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4769\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/CE-Picture-2_social_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" \/><br \/>\nGeography can serve as a starting point for building a community engagement strategy. And, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/what-is-gis\">GIS<\/a> technology can provide you with the tools you need to accomplish it. Maps and spatial analytics form a sort of <em>universal translator<\/em> that allows us, as individuals, living and working in communities, to build strong, long-lasting relationships with other people in other communities simply by sharing geographic information.<!--more--><br \/>\nHere\u2019s three ways you can get started with community engagement using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\">ArcGIS<\/a>:<strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n1.       <\/strong><strong>Empower your community with crowdsourcing apps<\/strong><br \/>\nCrowdsourcing is the process of collecting volunteered information from people. If you give them the right tools, they can become your eyes and ears on the ground.<br \/>\nHere\u2019s an example. The State of California is suffering a decade long drought and cities are feeling the pinch of a growing, very serious water shortage. In response, the City of Los Angeles began a concerted water conservation effort named <a href=\"http:\/\/everydrop.la\/\">EveryDrop<\/a>. As part of their EveryDrop platform, the city offers a free crowdsourcing app for Apple and Android phones that allow citizens to report the location of water waste.  The app also educates them in ways to better conserve water. You can read more about EveryDrop <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/arcnews-by-esri\/getting-citizens-involved-in-reducing-water-waste-f9f0df59e796\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4711\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4711\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/EveryDrop_phoneApp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The EveryDrop app engages citizens by giving them an easy way to report water waste.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIf you\u2019re an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\/arcgisonline\">ArcGIS Online<\/a> subscriber, you already have access to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=74b016cef7db42b28599adc5a14b010c\">Crowdsource Reporter app template<\/a>. This template allows you to configure a responsive app that works with your smartphone, tablet, or desktop browser. Crowdsource Reporter is a way for you to combine geography with important issues to generate community engagement activities.  You can <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/crowdsource-reporter\">download the source code<\/a> on GitHub.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4712\" style=\"width: 344px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4712 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/3-24-2015-4-51-47-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"526\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crowdsource Reporter helps people report their observations and issues.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nEmpowering people to send you their observations is one thing; doing something with the data is another. A critical activity for maintaining your crowdsourcing channel is to aggregate your crowdsourced data, analyze it, and then take action. There\u2019s a companion application to Crowdsource Reporter called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=43a4a0dbf9914f93bf0657f7839fa655\">Crowdsource Manager<\/a> that can help you do just that. Again, this is a free template with your ArcGIS Online subscription.  You can <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/crowdsource-manager\">download the source code<\/a> on GitHub.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4713\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4713\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/CrowdsourceManager_current-1024x524.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"327\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crowdsource Manager includes tools for reviewing details, updating status, and assigning responsibility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAnother form of crowdsourcing is, well, a form. A survey form to be exact. Surveys are similar to reporting observations with a mobile app except that they can be administered by a person (to another person), or made available via a website and people are invited to participate.<br \/>\nCombining geography with a survey can help to illustrate that you\u2019re interested in a place that\u2019s important to you or that the surrounding environment is a key aspect of the issue you\u2019re trying to understand.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4714\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4714\" style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4714 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/GeoForm_Japan-554x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"614\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GeoForm is a simple way to ask people where the issue or observation is located.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIf you\u2019re an ArcGIS Online subscriber, you can create and deploy your own form using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=931653256fd24301a84fc77955914a82\">GeoForm template<\/a>. This template helps you create a responsive, web-based form that allows you to conduct location-based surveys. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/geoform-template-js\">download the source code<\/a> on GitHub.<strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n2.       <\/strong><strong>Tell Stories to Your Communities<\/strong><br \/>\nTelling people a story that\u2019s relevant to their location is powerful. If it\u2019s related to their business or an issue that matters to them, then providing them with a clear story about it can be amazingly effective in bringing attention to the matter, helping you to establish more resilient engagement with meaningful content. Storytelling is a great way to communicate with internal stakeholders, as well. When you combine geographic information with storytelling, information takes on a new character of realism that charts and graphs just can\u2019t instill. <a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/\">Story maps<\/a> provide a provocative way to explore data and navigate through information nuances.<br \/>\nHere\u2019s an example. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glencanyon.org\/about\/who-we-are\">Glen Canyon Institute<\/a> is a \u201cnon-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of Glen Canyon and a free flowing Colorado River.\u201d They develop loyal communities of members and people who want to get involved with one of their projects. So how does the Glen Canyon Institute communicate the importance their mission to these communities? One way they do it is by providing a story map that takes the viewer on a virtual tour of the Colorado River with more than 100 photos of key points of interest. You can tour this story map yourself at <a href=\"http:\/\/arcg.is\/1uZM2Ow\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4715\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4715\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/GlenCanyon_storyMap-1024x510.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"318\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glen Canyon: The Place No One Knew, a story map by the Glen Canyon Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIf you\u2019re an ArcGIS Online subscriber, you can create and share your own stories with story map apps, including the same app used by the Glen Canyon Institute. If you\u2019re interested in getting started with story maps, start with <a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-a-story-map\/\">What is a Story Map<\/a>?<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n3.       <\/strong><strong>Use Dashboards to Help Drive Your Community Engagement Strategy<\/strong><br \/>\nIt seems that everyone wants a dashboard app these days. A dashboard consolidates the measurements and reports of complex and often dynamic information into one simple view similar to the dashboard in your car. Your brain can absorb the information on a dashboard in just a glance.<br \/>\nGeography works nicely in dashboards \u2013 it helps people orientate themselves to the information. This is especially important for decision-makers who need to stay on top of unfolding situations\u2014they need to know what\u2019s going on and where it\u2019s going on in one glance.<br \/>\nA good example of a simple dashboard is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/SummaryViewer\/index.html\">Summary Viewer<\/a> solution template available through an ArcGIS Online subscription. As its name implies, the Summary Viewer summarizes the numeric attributes of features in a specified map layer that are within the visible area of the map. The summaries can be configured to show the sum, average, minimum, and maximum of specified field values.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4716\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4716\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2015\/03\/summary_viewer-1024x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Summary Viewer is a configurable dashboard for reviewing complex statistics at a glance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nRemember that dashboards can be very specific to project activities or organization assets. In other words, your dashboard doesn\u2019t necessarily have to reflect what people are saying or observing; instead, a dashboard can describe the progress of a program as a whole.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nBuilding Apps, Building Relationships<\/strong><br \/>\nAt the end of the day, community engagement depends on active listening, participation, and trust. Geography and mapping technology can play a key role in opening and sustaining the communication channels necessary to successfully support your communities both inside and outside your organization. Getting started with simple applications can help you build strong, long-lasting relationships with communities.
