The purpose of the Esri User Conference is to get people together and build a network, teach each other, and create understanding.<\/em> For those who attended the 2015 User Conference this week in San Diego, I want to thank you for everything you did to help make this year\u2019s conference such a tremendous success. For those who could not attend, I\u2019d like to take a few minutes to give you an overview of my opening remarks on Monday morning. <\/em><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s conference theme is \u201cApplying Geography Everywhere.\u201d And I\u2019d like you to really think about these three words.
\n\"\"
\nThe world that you and I live in is increasingly challenged. Population growth, pollution, over-consumption, unsustainable patterns, social conflict, climate change, loss of nature\u2026these are not good stories.
\nOne asks the question of themselves from time to time: \u201cWhere\u2019s this going to go? Is this really sustainable?\u201d And clearly it\u2019s not if we continue the patterns that we\u2019re on.
\nGeography, the science that you all work with, is an integrating science of our world. It brings together all the other sciences–hydrology, geology, climatology, sociology, anthropology, and all of the \u201c-ologies\u201d which rest on the spatial dimension. This framework provides rich content and also a context for understanding everything.
\nAnd understanding is the key. It\u2019s one of the keys that will help us address and take on the big challenges of our world today. It\u2019s clear to me that that is what this community is all about.<\/p>\n

GIS, in its digital manifestation of geography, goes beyond just the science. It provides us a framework and a process for applying geography. It brings together observational science and measurement, and integrates it with modeling and prediction, analysis, and interpretation, so that we can understand things. This is its foundation.
\n\"\"
\nThis understanding can be integrated into designing and planning, and decision making, and ultimately action. This cycle is at the heart of what GIS is about. And whether you are conscious of it or not, this is what you\u2019re actually implementing in your various organizations, creating information-based understanding that leads to rational action.
\nFor some of your organizations, GIS is becoming almost essential for how you do things, how you think, and how you act. It\u2019s also helping us be smarter. You are measuring everything. You are integrating things. You are gaining new insights.
\n\"\"
\nYou\u2019re automating and visualizing. You\u2019re seeing the whole, thinking holistically, and increasingly operating in real-time. For me, that\u2019s the meaning of this whole \u201ctechnicalization\u201d of the planet, and smart thinking and smart action.<\/p>\n

GIS is waking up the world to the power of geography, this science of integration, and has the framework for creating a better future. It seems to me that we are entering into a period of geographic enlightenment or \u201cgeo-enlightenment<\/strong>.\u201d
\nSo you might ask, what exactly is geo-enlightenment?
\nMy definition is that geo-enlightenment is understanding the interconnectedness of things.
\nLike us as a community, we\u2019re interconnected as individuals. We\u2019re interconnected with our planet. The planet and its ecosystems are rich with these interconnections. What we do here<\/em> affects there<\/em>. So geo-enlightenment is really about understanding this interconnectedness and also applying this knowledge everywhere to make the world a better place.
\n\"\"
\nWho\u2019s going to do this? My feeling, my belief, and my conviction is that this is all about what GIS professionals do. You<\/em> are the ones who are waking up the world and powering this new period of geographic enlightenment. Whether you are learning and teaching, whether you\u2019re creating new solutions, whether you\u2019re showing others what\u2019s possible, your footprints today are what other people are picking up and expanding upon.
\nWhat really excites me about our community is that you are so committed. I hear the \u201chero\u201d stories of working all night, of not just accepting the way things are, but moving on, and thinking, and making sure your lives and work matters.
