If you could not attend the 2015 User Conference and hear my opening remarks last Monday, I\u2019d like to share a few thoughts about Esri\u2019s role in serving our users as well as advancing GIS and spatial literacy. <\/em><\/p>\n

Our organization is about serving you, our users, with what you need and want. It\u2019s also about advancing GIS and a geographic initiative, promoting, and supporting the notion of \u201cgeoenlightenment.\u201d
\nAs an organization, Esri is strong and we\u2019re continuing to grow. We\u2019re dedicated to this. And we\u2019re excited to see what you can accomplish and to watch your work evolve.
\n
\nProfessional Development<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019ve been investing heavily in opportunities for your continued professional development with a number of lifelong learning initiatives. This includes meetings like User Conferences<\/a> where you can get together with your peers and learn from them as well as share your own best practices. We\u2019ve been investing in more virtual classes and a number of other initiatives such as MOOCs\u2014these massive online learning efforts; Esri Press<\/a>, now with several hundred books published; technical certifications<\/a>; and GeoNet<\/a>, an online community to try to keep the kind of learning and sharing that happens at our User Conferences going all year long, all around the world, for all of our users.
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nTo further support your professional development, we recently announced that the ArcGIS Home Use Program<\/a> will now extend to the entire Esri product, not just the desktop.
\nWe\u2019re also trying to reach out to a whole new generation of users with the Young Professionals Network<\/a>. This is intended to bring more young people into our community and provide them with networking and professional development opportunities.
\n
\nPartner Ecosystem<\/strong>
\nWe have a rich and vibrant partner ecosystem with several thousand formal business partners. Some of them are very large companies that we collaborate with in many ways. These partners extend our product, or work with our product, to support you, and they\u2019re all committed to your success.
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nOn the opposite end of the spectrum, we\u2019ve gotten very engaged with the whole community of start-ups over the last year, and there are now hundreds of start-ups that we are working with that are understanding the power of maps and geography.
\n
\nNGO Relationships<\/strong>
\nWe support about 5,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with software, training, and technical support. We provide our software at virtually no cost to them, and they\u2019re lighting up the world with what they do. They\u2019re not only making a difference with the tools, but they\u2019re also enriching our entire community in areas such as conservation, education, humanitarian efforts, and much more.

\nEducation<\/strong>
\nWe now have thousands of schools around the world who are bringing GIS into their core curriculum getting kids at an early age. These young kids get the idea of geoenlightenment right away.
\n
\nApplying Geography Everywhere<\/strong>
\nSo why are we doing all of this?
\nWhere is this going to lead?
\nWhat is the outcome of all of our collective work?
\nWhen you think about it, it\u2019s only been about 50 years since people started putting maps into computers. And look at the amazing things we\u2019ve been able to accomplish in that relatively short time.
\nAs we continue advancing and leveraging GIS and as we keep bringing in new generations of technology as well as new generations of people, my sense is we\u2019re going to achieve extraordinary things.
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nUltimately, I think that GIS will create a nervous system for our planet as we leverage all of our sensors and measurements. And it\u2019s going to be a system that has the potential to alter the evolution of our planet. It will be a system of understanding, a platform for better decision making, and it will help us all to create a more sustainable future.
\nIs such a future possible? That\u2019s a fundamental question. It haunts me from time to time, particularly when I read the news about what\u2019s going on in the world. But ultimately, I believe that it is possible.
\nBased on my life experience, and watching your work, and seeing the advances that are happening in technology, my sense is this is not only going to be possible, it\u2019s actually going to be inevitable.
\nI want to express how deeply I feel about supporting you and I want to thank you for that. My colleagues and I appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
