{"id":6944,"date":"2016-04-15T13:15:59","date_gmt":"2016-04-15T20:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/?p=6944"},"modified":"2016-04-15T13:15:59","modified_gmt":"2016-04-15T20:15:59","slug":"defeating-polio-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"insider","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/insider\/defeating-polio-in-iraq","title":{"rendered":"Defeating Polio in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Post-immunization Campaign Surveys Use Real-Time Data Collection<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nBy Jessica Wyland<br \/>\nThe outbreak of polio in Syria and Iraq between October 2013 and April 2014 was described by one United Nations spokesperson as, \u201carguably the most challenging outbreak in the history of polio eradication.\u201d Polio, a highly contagious disease that primarily afflicts children younger than age 5, can lead to partial and sometimes fatal paralysis.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/04\/polio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6945\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/04\/polio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more-->What followed the outbreak was the largest ever immunization response in the history of the Middle East. More than 70 mass immunization campaigns were implemented in eight countries, aimed at reaching 27 million children. By October 2015, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF) announced that the Middle East polio outbreak is closed.<br \/>\nAlthough Iraq is among countries no longer infected with the polio virus, it remains vulnerable. The WHO continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health in Iraq to carry out nationwide polio immunization campaigns, going from house to house to vaccinate children. They follow each campaign with a survey to assess vaccination rates.<br \/>\nSurveys are designed to show whether vulnerable populations, such as internally displaced persons and refugees, are being reached effectively. Collected data helps identify gaps \u2013 unvaccinated children and reasons for not vaccinating as well as hard-to-reach or unsecure areas. It locates primary healthcare centers, districts, and provinces responsible for children who did not receive the vaccination.<br \/>\nResults are used mid-campaign to make course corrections and post-campaign to plan future surveys.<br \/>\nInstead of paper surveys, which can take weeks to collect and process, the WHO field team in Iraq gathered real-time data using Survey123 for ArcGIS\u00ae, a mobile app from Esri\u00ae. Survey123 for ArcGIS is a simple and intuitive form-centric data-gathering solution that makes it easy to create, share, and analyze surveys.<br \/>\n\u201cSurvey123 enables us to analyze and share data on a daily basis for action and follow up the next day by the Ministry of Health,\u201d said Wasan Al-Tamimi, a WHO technical officer.<br \/>\nThe app was installed on 150 Android\u00ae tablets, (it also works on iOS and Windows\u00ae devices). WHO survey teams reported on their experience with Survey123 for ArcGIS saying the app is user friendly, easy to handle, and simplifies data transmission.<br \/>\nThe team collected more than 60,000 polio surveys using Survey123 for ArcGIS and extended their use of the app to assess the cholera immunization campaign. According to Ravi Shankar, a technical officer at WHO headquarters, WHO offices in other countries have expressed interest in using Survey123 for ArcGIS in future field deployment activities.<br \/>\n\u201cSurvey123 for ArcGIS proved to be an end-to-end solution that covers authoring the form, accurate and real-time data collection, analysis, and visualization,\u201d said Jawameer Kakakhan, WHO technical
