Esri Users Share and Explore Smart Communities Trends, Use Cases, and Solutions at the 2016 User Conference<\/em>

\nWhat do smart communities mean to you? For GIS professionals working in government, it\u2019s a well-known concept that is transforming the dialogue about geospatial technology within their organizations.
\n\u201cWhile GIS may not be perceived as a top priority in government, it is the technology that enables communities to become smarter,\u201d said Christopher Thomas, director of government markets at Esri. \u201cGIS is evolving and getting smarter\u2014and GIS professionals are more important than ever.\u201d

\nGIS professionals attending the Esri User Conference<\/a> in San Diego this week shared how the smart communities movement is enabling them to engage with decision makers in new ways and demonstrate the power of GIS.
\n\u201cSmart communities is an initiative that is banding together everyone in government\u2014and one that today\u2019s savvy GIS professionals are leveraging to improve collaboration and increase GIS adoption within their organizations,\u201d Thomas said.
\nThe conversation is changing from \u201cDo you want to be a part of my GIS committee?\u201d to \u201cDo you want to become a smarter community?\u201d
\nThe resounding answer is \u201cyes.\u201d

\nFrom technical demonstrations and paper presentations, to thought-leader discussions and the Smart Communities showcase, conference attendees explored innovative applications of ArcGIS for building smarter communities.

\nIn his presentation \u201cTop Trends in Government,\u201d Thomas stressed the need for today\u2019s GIS professionals to understand current government trends\u2014including transparency, data-driven decisions, public engagement, and sustainability\u2014with current technology trends such as open data, mobile, real-time, storytelling, 3D, and geodesign. Understanding these trends and how they interact can help GIS professionals identify innovative solutions for the challenges that are top of mind with decision makers.
\nSmart communities that employ the latest mobile strategies, for example, are transitioning from using mobile for asset management to using it for homeless outreach and human services. Conference attendees also got a first look at the new Esri Smart Communities website<\/a>, with use cases about the City of Los Angeles<\/a>, City of Charlotte<\/a>, and Pinellas County<\/a>.
