{"id":8829,"date":"2016-11-15T13:17:39","date_gmt":"2016-11-15T21:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/?p=8829"},"modified":"2016-11-15T13:17:39","modified_gmt":"2016-11-15T21:17:39","slug":"city-of-tucson-police-department-supports-the-white-house-police-data-initiative","status":"publish","type":"insider","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/insider\/city-of-tucson-police-department-supports-the-white-house-police-data-initiative","title":{"rendered":"City of Tucson Police Department Supports the White House Police Data Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tucson Police Department hosted its inaugural Data Sharing Event last weekend in support of the Department\u2019s commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-white-house-police-data-initiative-highlights-new-commitments\">White House Police Data Initiative<\/a>.  The event provided a collaborative, innovative, and fun approach to gathering and analyzing data from bicycle and pedestrian collisions, and it generated a robust discussion about distracted behavior.  Members from the Tucson Department of Transportation, various Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs, the University of Arizona, civic and social organizations, and other volunteers all participated.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8831\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nParticipants gathered in groups and analyzed redacted reports on the collisions that were in paper format.  Esri\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=931653256fd24301a84fc77955914a82#!\">geoform<\/a> application was to used capture the paper information and map it quickly.  Attributes identified by reviewing the reports, injuries, and citations were all collected.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8833\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn real time, the data was displayed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/products\/dashboard\">Operations Dashboard<\/a> which was projected overhead for all participants to see.  Charts interactively changed to show the attributes that were collected.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8834\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nPeter Johnson, the GIS Supervisor at the City of Tucson was excellent in supporting the Police Department to the event and sees the event having longer term improvement stating \u201c<em>The GIS Unit at the City of Tucson&#8217;s Information Technology Department is a partner with the Tucson Police Department in helping them turn their wealth of data into a wealth of information. We do this through improved data visualizations, analysis, access and automation. All of which will lead to improved planning, operational awareness, policing strategies and coordination of enforcement activities for the Police Department.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nThe Tucson Police Department had a goal of making processes better.  With key stakeholders in the room, they quickly assembled a survey using <a href=\"https:\/\/survey123.arcgis.com\/\">Survey123<\/a> to poll all participants about what data is most important to them and what data could be collected better in the future.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8835\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/app\/uploads\/files\/2016\/11\/Tucson_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nData that was collected was immediately shared to <a href=\"http:\/\/data.cotgis.opendata.arcgis.com\/\">Tucson\u2019s Open Data site<\/a> utilizing <a href=\"http:\/\/opendata.arcgis.com\/about\">ArcGIS Open Data<\/a>, making it available for all and supporting the White House Police Data initiative.  Students from the University of Arizona have some great plans in taking this data and doing further analysis on it to help make a more livable community.<br \/>\nSergeant Matthew Faulk who helped organize the event sees \u201c\u2026. from our perspective one of the most important elements is the Police Department to having a 360 dialogue with the community.
