Dan Rutherford of the International Council on Clean Transportation told the <em>Post<\/em> that if the shipping industry were a country, it would rank as the sixth-largest CO<sub>2<\/sub> emitter in the world."},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"Acknowledging this impact, the United Nations (UN) International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently endorsed the ocean shipping industry\u2019s commitment to reduce emissions to, at most, 50 percent of 2008 levels by the year 2050.\r\n\r\n<strong>Target Defined\u2014Now What?<\/strong>\r\n\r\nHow will the industry achieve its goal? Experts quoted in the <em>Post<\/em> article foreshadowed the use of cleaner power sources, including biofuels or batteries, as well as ship designs that are more efficient. But there\u2019s more to the industry\u2019s strategy.\r\n\r\nAs businesses and governments adopt smart technologies to meet a myriad of demands, the shipping industry will likely follow suit. Working together, IoT-based sensors, machine learning, and location-intelligence technologies could be used to analyze and support a seafaring vessel\u2019s performance.\r\n\r\nA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/location-intelligence\">location intelligence<\/a> platform powered by a modern geographic information system (GIS) monitors operations data in real time, reporting diagnostics and other relevant information on a location-aware dashboard. Such a system can identify where, when, and how machinery is underperforming. That information can help crews resolve issues before they could affect the ship\u2019s performance and, by extension, its emissions. From there, executives would be able to roll data into national and international reports that verify the industry\u2019s progress toward the emissions targets."},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","layout":"standard","image_reference":null,"image_reference_figure":"","spotlight_image":null,"section_title":"","spotlight_name":"","position":"Left","content":"<h2>Supply Chain Implications<\/h2>\r\nThe shipping industry\u2019s CO<sub>2<\/sub> reduction goals could have ripple effects on the manufacturing sector. With global manufacturing now a multi-transit process\u2014parts are shipped to multiple locations for assembly or sub-assembly\u2014the need to reduce shipping emissions could hasten the adoption of on-site production facilities such as 3D printing at ports, essentially building the goods from raw materials in-country rather than shipping from another location.","snippet":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<strong>Hitting the Target<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWhile the IMO\u2019s goal of cutting emissions by half is a big step, some in the industry say they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/254633\/posidonia-2018-shipowners-stand-alone-in-cutting-co2-emissions\/\">skeptical it can be achieved<\/a>. Others say it falls short by several billion tons. The <em>Post<\/em> cited the International Council on Clean Transportation, which says that in order to align with the UN\u2019s treaties to combat climate change, the shipping industry would have to create no more than 17 billion tons of carbon dioxide\u2013equivalent emissions between 2015 and 2050. The IMO anticipates between 28 billion and 43 billion tons of emissions during that period.\r\n\r\nRegardless of the exact number, the IMO\u2019s strategic resolution makes clear that changes are underway for the shipping industry. Like their counterparts in other asset-heavy industries such as aviation, shipping companies will need to embrace new techniques and technologies along with a dose of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/change-management-and-location-intelligence\/\">change management<\/a> to make drastic reductions in CO<sub>2<\/sub>
