An investment team considering a mining opportunity in Australia might ask how exposed the assets are to the threat of wildfire.\r\n\r\nFor those holding the purse strings of the global economy, the ability to quantify and analyze the effects of business on nature, and of nature on business, is becoming an essential competitive advantage.\r\n\r\nA specialized brand of spatial finance\u2014a term coined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/research\/sustainable-finance\/\">Oxford University\u2019s Sustainable Finance Group<\/a>\u2014has arisen to meet the demand for such insights.\r\n<h3><strong>Spatial Finance: Assessing Sustainable Risk and Opportunity\u2014From Earth and Space<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nThis new application of spatial finance relies on a suite of innovative technologies including a geographic information system (GIS), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/think-tank-what-leading-businesses-see-in-remote-sensing\/\">remote sensing<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/artificial-intelligence-and-location-intelligence-for-business\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) to generate insights on sustainability-related risks and opportunities in locations around the world.\r\n\r\nThe near real-time speed of imagery and information generated by satellites, drones, or IoT sensors has made spatial finance attractive to bankers who are well-versed in high-frequency data. Machine-learning algorithms rapidly process images and sensor readings of forests, coastlines, or cropland, spotting anomalies or patterns on a global scale.\r\n\r\nGIS enables lenders and advisers to map and analyze these findings via a geographic approach that incorporates business infrastructure, supply chains, and insurance policies. From this holistic operational view emerges a powerful form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/location-intelligence\">location intelligence<\/a>\u2014one that allows executives to anticipate places where business and sustainability priorities might clash or successfully merge. They can then tailor strategies accordingly.\r\n\r\nDavid Patterson, head of conservation intelligence at the UK branch of World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has seen significantly more interest in spatial finance\u2014and a related practice referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-01\/Geospatial_ESG_Report.pdf\">geospatial ESG<\/a>\u2014in just the last six months. \u201cIt\u2019s only going to be a matter of time until we see this more and more mainstreamed,\u201d he told <em>WhereNext<\/em>."},{"acf_fc_layout":"quote","image":503832,"text":"When a company\u2019s sustainability practices\u2014or lack thereof\u2014impair its access to financing, its cost of capital, or its insurance eligibility, sustainability quickly becomes a C-suite issue. ","author_name":"","author_profession_organization":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3><strong>Geographic Location: The Nexus of Nature and Finance <\/strong><\/h3>\r\nSpatial finance is predicated on the idea that geographic location, the natural environment, and economic outcomes are interlinked. Those who can discern patterns and trends in those relationships\u2014and factor them into decisions about whether to back a startup or write an insurance policy\u2014can minimize losses and safeguard returns.\r\n\r\nNo less an authority than Adam Smith, the forefather of capitalism, attested to the power of location to influence financial fate. In his landmark tome <em>The<\/em> <em>Wealth of Nations<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-geography-of-poverty-and-wealth\/\">Smith notes<\/a> how countries with access to coastlines, which facilitated trade, outperformed those situated inland. In the 21st century, it matters not only how close a company is to resources, but also how it treats those resources. Spatial finance makes it harder for companies to hide harmful activities.\r\n\r\nThe practice can be employed by investors and insurance firms to analyze would-be partners or customers.\r\n\r\nIt can also help companies analyze their own operations around the world and understand areas of risk.\r\n\r\nMany firms first turn to spatial finance for help with a pressing need: identifying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/about\/climate-action\/overview\/climate-risk-finance-insurance\">climate risks<\/a>, ideally before the worst-case scenarios come to pass. The eruption of wildfires in Australia\u2014estimated to have caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2020\/jan\/08\/economic-impact-of-australias-bushfires-set-to-exceed-44bn-cost-of-black-saturday\">over $4.4 billion in economic damage<\/a>\u2014was a flash point for the Swiss private bank Lombard Odier. To better assess how such natural catastrophes threaten business assets and infrastructure, the firm engaged geospatial consultants.\r\n\r\nBy interweaving satellite imagery with data on temperatures, wind speed, and humidity in the affected Australian regions, the Lombard Odier team determined that wildfires could have been predicted using the toolset of spatial finance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-10-22\/investors-gauge-future-climate-risks-with-satellite-imaging\">As reported in <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, geospatial analysis is now an input in investment decisions at Lombard Odier."},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","layout":"standard","image_reference":null,"image_reference_figure":"","spotlight_image":null,"section_title":"","spotlight_name":"","position":"Right","content":"<h3><strong>The Importance of Self-Monitoring <\/strong><\/h3>\r\nBusiness executives are beginning to recognize that their operations and business partners are under scrutiny in ways that were previously impossible.\r\n\r\n\u201cThere's a much higher level of scrutiny, particularly in light of the increasing availability of satellite imagery and other remote sensing data,\u201d says Richard Hall of Buckhead Resources. \u201cThis may increase risk in some ways, but it also offers significant opportunities to collaborate and improve operations.\u201d\r\n\r\nFor instance, watchdogs can use satellite-based sensors to track how much methane is emitted from a source, and which company owns that source. Other remote data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/united-cacao-and-amazon-imagery-analysis\/\">reveals deforestation and its perpetrators<\/a>.\r\n\r\nTransparency, in other words, is no longer a choice.\r\n\r\n\u201cWith this remote sensing, different stakeholders are able to call out situations that may warrant action that may have previously gone unnoticed and unaddressed,\u201d Hall says.\r\n\r\nSavvy executives will use remotely sensed data and GIS analysis to monitor their own operations and stamp out bad practices before watchdogs do.","snippet":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"As investment banks, data providers like S&amp;P Global and Refinitiv, and third-party consultants and watchdogs like WWF dedicate more resources to spatial finance, business executives are taking note. Companies that use GIS software can <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/home\/\">plumb thousands of data layers that are updated daily or weekly<\/a> on measures likes heat indexes, water quality, and deforestation. Even a basic geospatial capability can help CEOs anticipate the sustainability-related issues that financial institutions, insurers, and other business partners might flag.\r\n\r\n\u201cGIS is the anchor point,\u201d says Pablo Izquierdo, GIS lead for the WWF Intelligence team. \u201cIt\u2019s the workshop where you pull everything together.\u201d\r\n<h3><strong>Measuring the Imponderables<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nThe definition of spatial finance is broad and can technically apply to any sort of economic indicator that can be measured from space or terrestrial sensors. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some investors relied on satellite imagery of <a href=\"https:\/\/internationalbanker.com\/brokerage\/how-satellite-imagery-is-helping-hedge-funds-outperform\/\">Chinese automobile plants<\/a> to assess economic activity and adjust investments. Hedge funds have used remote sensing to monitor oil inventory levels, lumber supply, and crop yields.\r\n\r\nHowever, the more innovative application of spatial finance today may be its ability to measure traditionally nebulous environmental outcomes, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/indigo-ag-pursues-innovation-in-the-dirt-and-from-outer-space\/\">carbon-trapping power of untilled soil<\/a> or the effect of pollinators\u2014or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/publications\/wherenext\/claudia-blagu-of-ingka-investments\/\">invasive species<\/a>\u2014on agriculture or timberland. The WWF and others refer to this narrower scope as <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf-sight.org\/geospatial-esg\/\">geospatial ESG<\/a>.\r\n\r\nFinancial institutions\u2014which often invest over decades\u2014increasingly recognize the importance of minimizing methane emissions, habitat destruction, and other activities that harm the natural world and heighten climate risks. Their spatial finance analysts rely on advances in data technology and location intelligence to translate those factors onto the balance sheet\u2014or more accurately, the smart map.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe ability to assign economic values to things\u2014to positive externalities which before had just been taken for granted\u2014that is a key aspect of this discussion,\u201d says Richard Hall, president of Buckhead Resources, a natural resource management and advisory firm based in Atlanta, Georgia.\r\n\r\nFor example, S&amp;P Global <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/environment-and-energy\/muni-bond-market-taps-satellite-data-to-assess-climate-risk\">has used NASA satellite imagery to study public water utilities<\/a>. Analysts determined that utilities sited near ecosystem resources like evergreen forests had better outcomes on debt metrics. It's an on-demand view of the world that may factor prominently in tomorrow's brand of spatial finance.","snippet":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"The term, popularized by the United Nations-sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.millenniumassessment.org\/en\/index.html\">Millennium Ecosystem Assessment<\/a>, identifies the benefits that society and the planet derive from healthy ecosystems like woodlands, wetlands, coastal reefs, and mangrove forests. Rather than seeing trees only in terms of the dollar value of timber, firms like Buckhead Resources use spatial finance to also quantify a forest\u2019s value as a carbon sink, as a source of revenue from hunting or other recreational activities, or as a natural bulwark that prevents soil erosion.\r\n\r\nThe dual view afforded by spatial finance helps Hall offer landowners, timber companies, and other clients guidance on complex questions. By analyzing metrics like soil and water quality and nearby transportation infrastructure in a geographic context, he can advise a company on how to optimally manage land for a combination of uses including commercial forest management, mining, or conservation. The same analysis can extend to forestry and other natural resource firms that are exploring a transition from land use focused on natural resource management to uses such as real estate development, infrastructure, or renewable energy.\r\n\r\nFor Hall, who opened his firm just two years ago, GIS\u2019s data and analytical capabilities are the linchpin of spatial finance, and help generate the kinds of insights that might normally come from a much larger firm. \u201cWe\u2019re able to do so much more than we could do otherwise by leveraging our abilities with a powerful GIS platform,\u201d he says."},{"acf_fc_layout":"quote","image":503852,"text":"Being able to visualize and effectively manage with a good GIS package is critical. Many financial contracts these days include environmental, social, and governance (ESG) guidelines around measures like carbon emissions. For multinational companies and the banks and investors that provide them financing, lack of transparency on supply chain impacts or the actions of business partners can trigger fines and damaging headlines.\r\n\r\n\u201cThere\u2019s huge demand from financial institutions to better understand what\u2019s going on,\u201d says WWF\u2019s Patterson. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of regulation coming on top of them. They sign up to these agreements and, in many cases, they struggle to understand if they are complying to those agreements.\u201d\r\n\r\nFor instance, a bank that adopts the <a href=\"https:\/\/equator-principles.com\/about-the-equator-principles\/\">Equator Principles<\/a>, a major benchmark of socially responsible practices for financial institutions, has to consider the impact of loans on critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/natural-resources\/us-map-of-biodiversity-importance-now-available-in-arcgis-living-atlas\/\">biodiverse habitats<\/a>. With a GIS-powered dashboard, bank executives can leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/capabilities\/imagery-remote-sensing\/overview\">remote-sensing data<\/a> to monitor where companies in their portfolio might be operating in proximity to protected sites.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe smart actors I see now are the ones who are closely watching developments, preparing and building capacity, hiring the right people, and are already there demanding access to asset data and better environmental data,\u201d Patterson says.\r\n<h3><strong>To Grow, Protect, and Preserve<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIt\u2019s telling that many of the places on earth that have the highest levels of biodiversity also tend to be rich in natural resources; healthy ecosystems foster the ideal conditions for natural life, and economic opportunity often follows.\r\n\r\nGuided by the geographic context of location intelligence, spatial finance and geospatial ESG help stewards of capital
