Raster Analysis and Spatial Analyst at UC2017

The 2017 User Conference in San Diego is right around the corner!  For those of you who wish to learn more about raster analysis with ArcGIS, read on for some sessions and presentations to be sure to attend.

Using the Spatial Analyst extension for raster analysis

Spatial Analyst: An Introduction
This session discusses and demonstrates the analytic functionality and main components of the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. Some highlighted areas of functionality include: terrain analysis, surface modeling, surface interpolation, suitability modeling, hydrologic analysis, statistical analysis, and image classification.

Python: Raster Analysis
The integration of map algebra with Python opens a new dimension for raster analysis and the automation of geoprocessing workflows. Using real world examples, this session will include an introduction to the Spatial Analyst arcpy module, demonstrate best practices for using the raster object and classes to expand your modeling capability, show how to use raster functions to optimize performance, and identify how to use NumPy to extend your analysis.

Modeling Renewable Energy Potential Using ArcGIS
Utilities, governments and development organizations around the world are using GIS to assess the feasibility and economic potential of renewable energy resources. This session will show you how to calculate renewable energy potential, pick the sites with the highest potential and how to use a story map to organize and present the results. Three renewable energy sources will be explored: rooftop solar, biomass and marine.

Getting Started With Map Algebra Using the Raster Calculator and Python
This demo is a general introduction to Map Algebra. Map Algebra is a simple and powerful language that executes Spatial Analyst tools, operators, and functions to perform geographic analysis. Map Algebra is available through the Spatial Analyst module; an extension of the ArcPy Python site package.

Suitability

Finding the Best Locations Using Suitability Modeling
Suitability modeling is one of the most common types of modeling performed in GIS. Suitability models are used to answer questions such as where to site a housing development, which locations are most preferred by deer, or identify areas most at risk during a fire. This session will guide you through how to create a suitability model using a variety of approaches while focusing on the weighted overlay technique, explore how preferences and weights are assigned, and discuss problems commonly encountered.

Suitability Modeling and Cost Distance Analysis Integrated Workflows
In this demonstration we will develop a management plan for bobcat. We will use suitability modeling to identify the best habitat patches for bobcats. Then, we will use cost distance analysis to connect these patches with the optimum network of wildlife corridors.

Distance Analysis

Identifying the Best Paths with Cost Distance Analysis
Cost distance analysis can be used to create corridors between a series of wildlife habitat patches, locate a road to a new development, or determine the best way to reach an injured hiker. This session will guide you through the basics of creating a raster cost surface, how to produce least-cost paths between sources, and we will introduce a new tool that connects a series of sources with the optimum network of paths.

Hydrology and Water resources

Creating a Hydrologically Conditioned DEM
A hydrologically conditioned digital elevation model is needed for support of hydrologic and hydraulic analyses in GIS. This session will introduce the concept of a hydrologically conditioned DEM, the tools and the workflows for creating them through discussion and demonstration.

GIS Techniques for Floodplain Delineation
This technical workshop presents the use of GIS techniques for preliminary floodplain delineation and flood impact assessment. It shows several techniques of mapping flood areas and calculating their impacts in increasing order of complexity, as a function of available input data.

 Creating Watersheds and Stream Networks
This session will describe the tools and workflow that are the foundation for surface hydrologic analysis with ArcGIS. We will discuss the process for turning a DEM into a flow direction map and how to use this to derive watersheds and stream networks.

Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling
This technical workshop presents GIS techniques that can be used for terrain analyses, hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) characteristics extraction, numerical model input and output, modeling process automation, and result mapping. HEC’s HMS and RAS form the modeling backbone for H&H analyses used in this workshop.

Surface Interpolation

Creating Surfaces from Various Data Sources
This session will present the data structures and types of surfaces that are common in GIS and the tools for creating them. We will discuss and demonstrate different types of surfaces and guidelines for choosing appropriate tools, with particular emphasis on interpolation tools for creating raster surfaces.

Surface Interpolation in ArcGIS
This demonstration will cover some commonly used interpolation techniques that are available in Spatial Analyst and Geostatistical Analyst. Examples will include the creation of a DEM from contour lines, spot heights and stream data, an exercise using point data constrained by a feature barrier, and some techniques to assist in deciding which interpolation method is more suited to your particular data.

Raster data and processing

Working with Elevation Services
The ArcGIS World Elevation services are a set of dynamic image services that provide web and desktop applications with three ways to access multi-resolution elevation data for the world. Topics covered will include accessing original data, dynamically derived elevation products such as hillshade, slope and aspect, as well as geoprocessing tools such as viewshed analysis.

Building Python Raster Functions
The raster function framework in ArcGIS allows for the implementation of on-the-fly processing to imagery and raster data. The Python raster function allows users to build their own functions in Python codes, making the framework easily extendable. This session will walk through an example of building a new function and making it available to users.

Raster Analytics in Image Server: An Introduction
Raster Analytics enables server to leverage the elastic aspects of the cloud architecture for image processing. The workshop will introduce you to the new distributed analytical capabilities of the ArcGIS Enterprise Image Server. We will discuss the value of distributed analytics, walk through the capabilities, describe the system architecture and concepts, explain deployment options, and articulate how this exciting technology will evolve with future versions of Image Server.

Raster Classification with ArcGIS Desktop
With the addition of the Train Random Trees Classifier, Create Accuracy Assessment Points, Update Accuracy Assessment Points, and Compute Confusion Matrix tools, it is a great time to check out the image segmentation and classification tools in ArcGIS. This presentation discusses image segmentation, compares the different available classifiers, and reviews the basic classification and accuracy assessment workflow.

Raster Function Processing
The raster function framework in ArcGIS enables on-the-fly processing for raster data and imagery. This framework provides a number of functions for image enhancements, rectification, analysis and other functionality. These functions can be applied as individual functions or chained together to provide complete process chains. They can be used dynamically per screen request of can also be used to process persistent outputs for entire images or collections of imagery.

Multidimensional and scientific data

 Analyzing Multidimensional Scientific Data in ArcGIS
The availability and quantify of scientific data is increasing exponentially. Fortunately, ArcGIS provides functionality for reading, managing, analyzing, and visualizing scientific data stored in three formats widely used in the scientific community – netCDF, HDF and GRIB. Using satellite and model derived earth science data, this session will present examples of data management, visualization and global scale spatial and temporal analyses in ArcGIS. Finally, the session will discuss and demonstrate how to extend the data management and analytical capabilities of multidimensional data in ArcGIS using python packages.

Scientific and Multidimensional Raster Support in ArcGIS
This session will demonstrate how the ArcGIS multidimensional data model can be used to support scientific data formats such as, netCDF, GRIB and HDF and allow us to manage and share analytical results using the ArcGIS Platform.

This demo will show how the ArcGIS platform can be used to analyze and visualize scientific data. Examples will include visualization and analysis of atmospheric, ocean, and land surface data in ArcGIS Pro.
